From the way you described it... I would say most definitely synchros... my last evo did it on 3rd and a little on 4th... never knew how to fix it or where to buy synchros... so can't help you there :P Hopefully someone else can point you in the right direction. GL

Well I have a few questions .... How many miles on the car? This only happens in high rpms or 4-5 gears? And you said it's your 1st stick?

75k i changed the trans fluid maybe 3k miles ago. only when i go into 4th it grinds if i granny shift it will go in with minimal problem. yes first manual trans car previous was auto. yes i know how to shift i've taken it to the track once and did auto-x with it and i've had no problems till today.

shouldnt change trans fluid:], everyone i know that changed trans fluit something breaks a few thousand miles later, after that many miles all the dirt and whatnot in the tranny is actualyl holding everything together and making it work properly

i just went through this problem but with my 3rd gear. it used to grind a little a high rpm's, had the fluid changed and immediately it started grinding at anything over 3000 rpm. the synchros were screwed and luckily got replaced under warranty about 2 weeks ago. havent had an issue since.

my tranny cost me 2260.00 cdn to have replaced. @ first just the chirp going into third and occasionally first and i starting having all kinds of trouble getting it out of first, damn near had to use two hands to pull it out. then a couple of days later went to go into reverse and it felt like a parking pin in an automatic had been slammed in causing tires to lock motor to slam around under hood.
generally would happen in first 3 or 4 feet of moving in reverse.

my tranny did cost me a little more to replace as i also had time for disassembly of old trannys, cleaning and hoist time while waiting for issurance adjuster as i was recently run into again(3 time in 11mnths and 1 tree fallen on it)thought it might have chipped a gear but to my discust..not one noticeable dammaged part other than syncros being rounded and the tranny guy asking me how i drove it @ 97000 kms, clutch comp gone and syncros were all shave to points...first owner of car drove **** out of it i quess, just found out after accidenet motor had been replaced under warr @32000 KMS 10000KMS BEFORE I BOUGHT IT.

tranny specialist up here say japanese can make there engines but it you want a long lasting tranny go with german.
