no crank sometimes....anybody having/had this issue?

ok so lately my car's been taking a lil while to start...its only sometimes, it takes weeks or months between "act-ups" sometimes also...
i go out like always and turn the key, and sometimes it takes a second after i turn the key for it to start (like turn key, hold there..*...1 mississipi...2 mississipi...*..then it cranks), other times it turns over instantly like it should...
ive been almost stranded 3 times at a gas station now...because theres a few times where it wont start till about 20+ mins...i pull in shut the car off, pump gas, get back in like 3-5mins later and try to start it and nothign happens...i have to leave it sit trying to start it again every 5-10 mins or so and eventually it starts like nothing ever happened
when i turn the key sometimes i can hear a sound...it almost sounds like the starter is TRYING to engage but it just doesnt ..like a "UGH" kinda sound (imagine if you were trying to push sumn wayy to heavy like *push* "UGH!"...and nothing happens....) as i turn the key..

all the lights and radio and such work i've checked and charged the battery and its ok, also i did test the amperage draw recently on the starter and it seems normal to me...

also when i do finally start the car the CE comes on and i get a code for crankshaft position sensor...personally i think the starter is kicking the bucket soon but figured since it'll take me a while to get the $ together and get the starter ill ask around a bit before i get a new one...
...i dont think its the crank sensor because the starter would have to be cranking first for the car not to start because it does not sense the crank position...

what do all u guys think...?
my thought sound about right..?
anybody had/have this issue?

If you are sure of the battery then the solenoid switch on the starter may need cleaning. It is the part that extends the shaft on the starter to engage the ring gear on the engine to crank it.

Your problem sounds like it is the starter soloneid. Can't be the starter because it starts up eventually try using some cleaner on the starter terminals and check the wires. That's my suggestion good luck.

ill try to do that sometime when i can...
i was also told by a coworker when it happens, see if i can jump the starter...(bypass the switch)
if it starts then its 90% switch, if not 100% starter....but then i have to rig some kinda bypass...(obviously using the right size wire and switch so i dont fry it all instantly and have to redo it)
but if any1's seen the 2.4 starter is hidden behind a heatshield behind the headers, behind a heatshield...quite a setup....*rolls eyes*...im sure its not as much work as it looks like...but i dont feel like messing around with it specially if the car is hot, untill it happens, but ussually when it happens or ive thought about it the car is HOT....so i figured id wait for it to cool off...then i forget...

ill try to check and clean connections first tho, i glanced at them before and they LOOK ok, but u never know...

thanks for the thoughts so far

no need to search, it's really simple. remove header, then heat shield , 2 bolts hold the starter in place , disconnect and install of the new one is the opposite if you have your tools ready it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes at most
