It doesn't necessarily mean better. It all has to do with what the engine was designed to use, and at what rate the gasoline burns. In some cases, putting a higher octane gas into an engine that doesn't need it may actually hurt the motor in the long run. The Mitsu manual says the car was designed for use with 87 octane gas.

But me? I always put in 89. Had a bad experience with some crappy 87 octane once, and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get over it. You should stop wasting your cash on high octane, though. It gives no performance gains, except for mental ones.

Absolutely, positively WRONG. Lots of people somehow have the idea that more is better but that's not the case. Octane reduces/prevents detonation and ping. It does this by making it harder to ignite the mixture. That makes it ignite later. That's for higher compression engines that need the time and resistance to get to full compression before firing.

The RA engine is made to run on 87 octane.
Will higher octane help a stock engine? NO
Will higher octane hurt a stock engine? MAYBE YES

DON'T RUN OCTANE HIGHER THAN THE ENGINE IS DESIGNED FOR UNLESS YOU'VE MODDED IT WAY UP.

Call me crazy, but how do you know the octane numbers and stuff? It says regular unleaded only, and there's only one regular unleaded pump at the gas station....?

As far as the whole octane thing goes, I've read plenty that say that it's bad for your car, and I've read plenty that say it's good for your car. I take it all with a grain of salt. Personally, I run 93 in my OZ and have had no problems. As a matter of fact, I get better gas mileage with 93 than I did with 87. After crunching numbers, it is cheaper fo rme to put 93 in my tank than to put 87 in (I have not tried 89, so I don't know the numbers for it).

At most gas stations, there is a little yellow sticker that says what the octane is. At the gas station I go to there are two pumps per spot (if that's the right word for it). One for diesel, another for 87, 91, and 93 octanes.
