Sportback down

I'm a noobe here but have been monitoring this board since getting an 04 Labrador Black Pearl RA Sportback at the end of June. Like the car a lot but not as hard edge as my heavily modded 89 Prelude 4ws which I sold as a DP. A very good compromise with my wife however as she needs an auto due to arthritis. We left on holidays last Sunday to go to our cabin at the lake driving two cars, my old truck with furniture and supplies followed by my wife in the Sportback with dog and cat. On a high speed section of the Coquihalla Connector in British Columbia at 110 Kms I glanced back to see a large dust cloud and no sign of my wife. After some years in law enforcement I knew that something bad had happened but had to go 3Km until turning around. On arriving I found the Sportback had gone off the highway when my wife had nodded off, rolled three times and ended up in the four foot deep median facing the wrong way. I could tell by the body language of people helping that she was still alive. Pets were both killed after being thrown out. She has minor skull fracture and some severe road rash on head and arm as well as many cuts and bruises. But whole and repairable! The Sportback is hardly recognizable as a car. Crumple zone worked well as my wife was not trapped but only had the space around her seat to live in. However neither front or side airbags deployed which concerns me. Owners manual states that they may not in rollovers but damage was so extensive to all parts of the car that they should have deployed perhaps saving the skull damage and road rash. In any case we are extremely lucky and grateful! Fortunately took the full replacement value insurance so will only be out deductables. Will take a few weeks to sort out and my wife is not sure about going to another Sportback. Just goes to show how your life can change in an instant. Miss our pets bigtime.

Glad to hear your wife is OK, very sorry to hear about your pets. Your pain is extreme and I hope the best to your wifes recovery and your replacement car even if it not a Sportback.

I am wondering if you have any pictures of the car, your words are descriptive although I would be interested in seeing what a rolled RA would look like.

Take Care!
Joe

Took some pictures at the towing yard and will post them if I can scan them into a file. Thanks for your concern.

Glad to hear your wife is going to be OK. Sorry to hear about the pets but this does put our existance in perspective. We are lucky just to be here and living on the coast is a great bonus.

Sorry to hear about this, happy your wife is ok.

This is probably a good reminder to get enough sleep.
