Nope, never happened to me before. I've heard a few other people on the '09 RA board having similar problems and there was never anything to worry about. When you say the light started blinking, did the check engine light go on? If it did you can take it back to the dealership and they can tell you whats wrong when they hook it up to the computer.

I actually think this is mentioned in the owner's manual.

Have had it happen to me once or twice. I never see the flashing "R" until I realize I am not moving anywhere when hitting the gas.

I have seen it a few times myself (this morning in fact). Blinking "R" and everything. I think there is a pattern to it and I'm trying to lock it down. Question to all those who have seen this, do you regularly use the parking brake ? I believe the blinking R is a computer error code of some kind. I haven't look in the manual yet to see what it says. I don't think there is anything to worry about in this but I am curious since I am a computer programmer with imbedded systems experience.

my only thought was that with my GTI if that happened it was bad news for your tranny however that was when you where driving and your "D" stated to flash it ment there where bad thing ahead.

I disagree in this case. To me it feels like a system configuration issue coupled with some kind of system safety override feature. I think the TC-SST is protecting itself from some kind of perceived thing. It's happening to too many of us to be a bad omen.

Although, I would not be surprised if they issue a "recall" and update the systems to alleviate the issue.

I do not use the parking brake.

I think it is simply a matter of the gear not properly engaging. Still at work so I cannot check the manual, but that is what I recall it saying.

That might be the problem. Does it happen when on an incline? It's harder on a trans to shift out of park and into gear when the weight of the car is resting on the trans, (or pawl if its an automatic - not sure what the SST uses). Should always use the brake and let the weight of the car settle on it before shifting into park.

I've had this happen before. From a cold start, put it into reverse and tried to move too fast. The car revved but didn't go anywhere (still in neutral)... haha. I guess the transmission/computer needed a bit more time to shift into reverse than I let it.

From the official TSB, available here...

Flashing "R" indicator on MID - When shifting into R (reverse position), the customer may notice the R in the MID flashing, indicating an unsuccessful shift. This may be due to gear blocking. The TC-SST is an automated manual transmission and occasional gear blocking is possible. If a customer complains of this condition, advise them to shift to a different gear and then retry reverse.

It's just like in most manual transmission cars - sometimes you can't get it in reverse, so you either have to let it roll a bit, or get it in another gear first. Since the internals of the SST besides the actuators and of course, the twin input shafts, it's practically a manual gearbox.
