When to take it into dealer for service?

Just bought a new 09 RA in WW a week and a half ago with 10yr/100k bumper-bumper extended warranty. Awesome car. 600 miles on it so far.

Plan on putting about 15-20k mi/yr on it, daily driver, mostly highway.

According to the service guide, it says first service @ 5000mi, oil change, check fluids. Then 2nd service @ 10000mi, oil change, NEW OIL FILTER.

So I have 2 questions.

1. Is there a typo? They're recommending a new oil filter every 10k (every other oil change) for normal duty.

2. Most people here, and it makes sense, go for the first oil change @ 1-3k then go with regular maintenance. Should I change the oil @ 2k, then again @ 5k? Dealer told me that whether it's them or an indy shop, that someone has to fill out the mitsubishi service schedule chart for warranty purposes. Do u guys actually keep track using that sheet?

that's the confusing thing is the dash display says every 5000 miles, but when i talked to the techs at the mitsubishi dealership where i bought my RA (jerry's mitsubishi in maryland) they said i should follow the severe maintenence schedule and take the car in every 3000 miles. i live in baltimore so i am doing a lot of city driving which is probably pretty rough on the car, so i don't think they are pulling my leg..

the manual has 2 different guidelines, one for severe (every 3k) and one for regular (every 5k).... i took my car in at 2500 just to get the 3k maintenence done because i figure a new engine needs at least new oil sooner rather than later.

can i ask how much you spent getting the 10yr/100k warranty?

Yeah I'm a little confused about that myself. Most of my driving's highway, like 90% of the miles (well with some traffic on the highway). The fact that they check-list changing the filter every other oil change is confusing too.

I got the warranty from the dealer through either repair master (which it says on one form) or zurich (which it says on another...). $1100 for 10yr/100k (whichever comes first). On the zurich guide sheet that I have, it's listed as "comprehensive" coverage, which pretty much mirrors "bumper-bumper".
