What paint did you use? I cant tell whether the Evo X red paint is glossy or not?

I used high temp paint and its got a matte effect but no glare.

never did it myself. but i'd imagine a matte finish would look better then a high gloss.

As an alternative you can probably find some X owners who would trade for the black one.

Dupli color 2328 Krylon plastic paint

And yes, tested in high temperature condition, and bad weather/winter/calcium conditions. All good. Compared side to side with an Evo cover. Same thing.

How do you paint the engine cover? Do you take the plastic off? If so, was it easy?

I gander you just take the cover off. Mask off the parts you don't want to be red. Spray away.

Yes the cover just puuls off really easy, and puts back really easy too. Searched the web to find exactly where the red part starts and stop. Lot of masking to do a perfect job. Can't sand surface, so it's why I used special plastic paint, so it bonds great without sanding.
