Fuel Efficiency Mods
right after i fill up my tank every week i tell my self im not gonna do any pulls or hit boost. the next i have already done 2 pulls. lol changing driving habits is very hard when you have a fun car lol. Im probably going to resort to getting a good eco map.
It's like when the supercharged S4 came out, and it had less hp than the outgoing V8 but got <gasp> 4 more mpg on the highway and all the eurolovers were fawning over it. I pointed out that a corvette still got better mileage and that really, should you be concerned over mileage when buying a strictly performance car?
That got their panties all twisted lol....
I was always told growing up that if you own a performance car and moan about its mileage, perhaps you shopped above your income bracket.
I only use my Ralliart as a "fun" car for evening and weekend driving. I have a crappy old Nissan Sentra that I use for work which gets good mileage, so that's how I justify the lousy mpg's I get with the Ralliart. I can't imagine using a car like ours for commuting to work if it was a long drive, because the cost for gasoline would be painfully expensive.
you only pay tax on a car once here when you purchase it, but when it does come down to maintenance and gas on 2 vehicles its gets silly...unless its a track only car.
could you get better MPG out of the ralliart? Yes.
will it be as fun to drive while getting better mpg? No.
Should you try? Only if you care.

Ok now there's been alot of things thrown around in this thread:
- Driving Habits: It's true that the more efficient the driver is the more mileage you can get out of the car. I have a fully stock vehicle and normal mixed driving I can get about 500Km (310 miles). When I really push it and I'm doing around 7.5L/100km(30 mpg) I can get almost 700km (435 miles). I've been dong 30-40km when the low fuel triangle comes on but going anymore than 40km gets me really nervous.
-Why did I buy the car if I'm gunna be a cheapo? Well the car is duel purpose. It can be efficient if you drive it properly, but it'll go like stink when called upon to do so. I also got the car because, like most of you, I'm an enthusiast. I was eyeing the car since it came out, so when the Impreza was smashed up it was my first and last choice. (OK the wife and I test drove an A3 for comparison purposes but it was horribly small)
The main reason I posted this was to see if anyone was getting better mileage (numbers?) after installing cold air intake, exhaust, upgraded intercooler system, etc... I do appreciate all the info and suggestions. It really gves me alot to think about when considering future mods.
Thanks

I really think that good fuel economy (when you don't have a lead foot) and good performance (when you do) is what makes an evo such an attractive option. My girlfriend got a Honda Fit
and some members here are almost getting the same MPG as her
--> evo gets almost equivalent fuel economy, 3x more HP, can drive in all weather, and doesn't look like a crushed mini van! win win win win!!!
Based on my previous experience with DSM's, I have been thinking about modifying the stock boost control system for improved MPG's. I would like to install a vacuum line going between the same points as the one with the OEM BCS in it. The added vacuum line would have a solenoid in it (controllable with an in-dash mounted toggle switch).

With the solenoid open, the boost pressure signal can reach the wastegate immediately resulting in increased turbo lag and increased fuel economy.
With the solenoid closed, the car would behave exactly as it did stock.
How does this sound? Has anyone done this?
Get a Cobb ap. I use the economy mode on trips or going to and from work and it's noticeably a big help. However the car will lose all its power and jerkiness just to drive like an average ES lancer
Custom tune is definitely best. I've notice on the streets I can get better gas mileage if I use paddles and keep it out of 6th gear. When under 50 MPH i belive the car eats more fuel in 6th gear because its under a lot of load at such a low rpm. So when under 50mph I keep it in 5th and have noticed an increase in MPG.

On stock tune, it seems like the two sweet spots to get over 25mpg is 45mph or 75mph in 6th gear with very light throttle to maintain constant speed.
Also starting to think it's better to give an aggressive amount of throttle to hit a coasting speed sooner. Seems like only @ 10% throttle, the engine uses the minimum amount, and anything over it's like it's preparing for a big lead foot drop
definitely can second you on that. when I drove a manual I used to think highest gear -> lowest rpm -> best mileage, but now that I have a real-time MPG display, it's nice to learn how to properly drive economically.
