$19,700

I think that I still have the advertisement somewhere. It was posted online.

I have seen new ones, around here, go for $22,000.

That car has been beat on. I wouldn't buy a car that has been running lean.

Like the saying goes, "Lean is MEAN" when it comes to engines...

If it's got a catless testpipe wouldn't that make it run rich? The DIY intake would balance it? Aren't lots of members running that intake with no issues?

Either way, i'd also pass on this one. Hell, it may even have a tune for all we know.

A catless testpipe might make the car think that it is running rich, but in reality it shouldn't create that issue. That might actually make the lean condition worse (if my logic is correct, which it may very well not be).

When I put an intake on the Ralliart, it was in desperate need of a tune. The Evolution X can run an intake without a tune, because it comes MUCH richer from the factory. Something as simple as a COBB AP should be able to correct this issue, as they come with a map for an Injen CAI (if not, I could probably find the correct calibrations).

From the front of the car to rear:

Downpipe --> Testpipe --> Midpipe --> Axleback.

If you can get under the car and have a peek, the testpipe will be under the two front seats, right smack in the middle. The Factory one will have a massive cat, this one could have a smaller cat, straight pipe or a resonator.

As far as the DIY intake, i have not installed one (yet) so I cannot comment on the perfromance. From what i've read, throttle response and sound has improved.
Very helpful post, thank you for taking the time to type that. I know the basics and will have the dealer put the car on a lift in the morning. How many cats is the car supposed to have? Thanks again, it's nice to get help from someone other than the dealer.

Starting to rethink my decision now, is this because of the CEL? Can you think of anything I can verify at the dealer to check on the car's health? It still has the factory warranty but I don't want to make a bad decision.

It cannot have any engine warranty left. That CAI has to have voided that.

I was under the understanding that the powertrain warranty still stands, but will not cover damage that could be attributed to the CAI. Am I wrong?

No, technically by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, you are correct. However, the dealer can refuse in which you have to pay out of your own pocket for lawyer/court to correct the problem.

Second, if the dealer does not care and let's say submits for warranty on the SST for replacement. A Mitsubishi Serivice Representative may...may...come inspect the car for scheduled maintenance and/or modifications. Mitsubishi has executive authority over the dealer.

Again, you would be out of pocket for lawyer/court to attempt to correct the problem.

I have owned a few performance cars and after owning/modifying my Ralliart for a year I would not buy a previously modified 4B11 from a dealership.

Was that with the Injen, AEM or DIY intake? I've got everything ready for the DIY intake but i'm going to hold off untill I purchase a wideband...

There is only have a single cat, located in the factory testpipe. Between the passenger and drivers seat. It's really fat and an eyesore, tought to miss it. I'm just throwing this out there, but I bet this car has a testpipe with no cat/resonator and it's throwing the cat code.

I would personally hold off untill you found a clean, stock RA. These cars are real finiky with mods, add that with a careless previous owner and you can be in for a world of hurt

If you are dead set on this RA, at the very least i'd get the dealer to put something in writing that states they will honour the factory warranty with the mod on the car.

I really appreciate the input I received from everyone, especially from you. Your advice was helpful without being condescending or rude. I thought about the deal some more (lost some sleep too) and in the end decided to back out of the deal because of the mods done to the car. If it was stock, I probably would have bought it. But like you said, there's no way of knowing what else had been done to the car or how hard its been driven. It's too bad there are no other ralliarts in my area, seems like it's the right kind of car for me...

Thanks again to everyone!

OP, if you're now interested in a NEW Ralliart, there's a Graphite Gray for sale at Gulfcoast Mitsubishi... Pensacola is about 3 hours away from Gulfport if you want to contact them and inquire. I had to drive all the way to Shreveport to get mine, total of 12 hrs back and forth.

Just putting that out there

You walk a fine line with that. The Mangusson (sp?) Warranty act does nothing to protect you from this. They have to prove that the CAI caused the damage. I am telling you, point blank, that that won't be difficult.

It was a UR SRI. Granted, they modified the MAF housing. Still, it would be irresponsible to put an intake on the car without getting it tuned. Get a DIY intake, but spend the $350 on a good tune.
