A noble effort, but good luck with that. It's illegal in New York but people still do it. I'll bet you $5 that kid that was involved still texts and drives.

Studies have conclusively shown that this type of education/presentation doesn't work. Look at DARE, for instance. That is about the biggest waste of time in the universe. What are you hoping to accomplish? Kids know not to text and drive. Adults are just as guilty of it, so it isn't an age thing. If you would do some actual research on this phenomenon and try to discover a fix for this, that would be great. Navigation systems that will read texts out loud to you and will respond with verbal input, for instance. Work on that. Don't waste your time preaching to kids. That very seldom works.

People will always say that when confronted with an individual that is emotionally attached to the issue. Whether they'll actually change their behaviour in the long run is a completely different story.

Don't get me wrong. I feel your pain. I am no longer a Ralliart owner, because a drunk driver ran a stop sign and totaled my car. The damage was insane. I know the pain of a long-term injury. I have many that I have never disclosed. I know how much it sucks to deal with insurance companies and watch something that you have invested a ton of time on obliterated before your very eyes. It sucks.

I would try to start a campaign, online, to end texting and driving. Maybe the answer is EXTREME penalties for those who are caught texting and driving (although, I think even that would be ineffective because then people would just try and hide it). Maybe start a charity to fund a public campaign to stop texting and driving. If marketed correctly, it is possible that a change in behavior MIGHT occur, but that is always a crap shoot.

My personal opinion is that there should be an "AWAY" mode for texts. I remember that AIM used to do that, back in the day. You could put up a message, like "Playing a Game" or "Walking the Dog". I want one which says "In the Car". Hell, maybe you could link it to your Twitter account. Some tech person will know how to do these things. Present those ideas to someone and try to get something going. There is an answer to this, though. I think that the answer is going to be something easy.

That is the best idea for an iPhone app that I have ever heard of, actually. If you figured out how to write the "Away Mode" APP for the iPhone, you would likely end this problem. If it worked, it would make the news. That would be a big deal, I think. Do it.

And if it ever does come out, let it be known that that was my idea.

Something similar coming in iOS 6 is called "Do Not Disturb".

http://www.apple.com/ios/ios6/

Along with "Eyes Free" to keep focus on the road.

Go for it!

I think it's a worthwhile effort. You might only change the mind of maybe 1-5% of the people you are trying to reach through your method but that's worth the while.

It takes all kinds of approaches to convince all different kinds of people to just one way of thinking and it's through the combined efforts of all these different methods that will ultimately make a societal impact.

In essence, every little bit counts as long as everyone cares about the same thing.

On the other hand, you can always petition for the outlaw of the automatic transmission. Love to see people text and drive while using manual transmission under heavy traffic conditions .

Do it

Hey OP I don't know you, but i did see the pic of your car somewhere on this forum.

Do it for yourself, if you save just one person it is still worth it. You will never know. But at least you did something rather than nothing.
