Can't be driven off road?!
i have put almost 8k miles on my RA since I bought it and about 1k of that has been on dirt and gravel roads. aside from a few scares and the now absence of a splash guard she handled herself remarkably well. as long as the roads are graded regularly there shouldn't be a problem with having a little fun in the dirt. keep in mind that though the car is resilient, it isn't impervious to any terrain to can dream of putting it through. be sensible, and you will be fine.
oh and p.s. don't let your foot off the gas in mud enjoy the pic

I was almost stuck in a similar situation, got stuck on a waterbar in a fire road. Had to create a makeshift ramp with logs and sticks. The AWD made it happen... A guy in a 2wd volvo got stuck behind me

good to know the car won't explode!
However, thx god that RA drive like a king on snow.
No, even the stock EVO are build for street. The rally version is like 16 times the price of an EVO. You will damage you car if you just bring the stock car off road. You will understand when you look at the bottom of your car. You need skip plates everywhere in the bottom and mud flaps to protect the car.

Yes, open your hood, and you can see the floor.
If you can go off road without any damage, that means God save your car. You are lucky.
Actually, that are different level of off road. Rally cars are mainly drive on a flat surface even off road. Anything beyond that will be for suv and trucks.

I was reading the manual this morning and came across a section that basically said "these vehicles have a great AWD system but are not designed to be used off road. Bumps could put a strain on the car and damage things."
I bet they just put that in there to cover their asses..

Yes, they are, although many of the changes between 9s and Xs (including X-RAs) moved the car away from its roots, at least for USDM Evos.
thanks for the reply. Nice pic haha how did you get out?

^this is off roading. A fire road is off-roading and fun! But i do it in my HEMI Durango
Do not follow the trucks into the thicket or out onto the beach at the Outer Banks, eh?
Any gravel/dirt road is considered 'on road' (think Rally races)...

Not really, gravel, dirt, and snow (snow in city is an exception) are all off road, but these surfaces are most likely flat. The track are tested before the racing begin. If you can find a place like this, feel free to have fun with your cars. However, most off road places are not so flat that only trucks or "some" SUV can be driven.
Actually, it is not about the capability of the car going off road or not. For sure that they are capable to do it. The main concern is the protection of the bottom of the car. The rocks and obstacle might scratch and damage the bottom of the stock car seriously without any protection. It make sense that mitsub don't wanna cover the damage that are purposely caused by the driver.

I've not heard anyone say "on-road" or "off-road" in the context of rallies. They say "tarmac" or "gravel" or "dirt" or whatever.

Aside from the wheel sensors, I think there's a pretty exposed wire where the cat is.
Other than that, I've taken it down gravel and rooted roads before and the car's fine. Lost an ABS sensor once.
With a good set of Ralliarmor flaps, I don't even have any dings in the paint from flying gravel.
I wouldn't take the thing off-road but a standard rally course you can probably drive at slow speed and not do damage. I did take the car airborne on some back country tarmac though. It's like a ski jump, as long as you land with the terrain it's a very gentle landing.

Lucky you. 3 new rock chips around the rear wheel wells after taking her on a gravel road last week (I have the Ralliarmour flaps). Touch up pen was $20 at Mitsu. I bought one last year at the same Mitsu for $13. The inflation on paint and all...
You gotta stop fixing the chips. You have to embrace the fact that you have a rally car and, unlike 99% of Evo owners, you are driving it on the surface for which it was designed. If you keep fixing the chips, you'll keep thinking about the chips.
I'm not saying that you should drive it like you stole it. That's silly. I'm saying that you should drive it like you stole it from your ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.

Seriously, I ~tried~ to fixed it with the touch up pen for about an hour, but gave up as it became extremely apparent that I need a respray. I finally caved in and got RallyArmor mud flaps for my car to prevent it from getting even worse.
I'm probably going to have the bad areas resprayed within the next year or two. After which, I'm going to have clear bra applied to the delicate areas.
Yes, I don't really care much about the chips in winter. It is like a normal thing.
I would even complain that mitsub has a thin and cheap paint.
Friend of mine drove his bmw off road. Full of chips after the trip. He end up spending more than my car to fix his chips.
