So I got a interesting one!

Quick Blurb...
My 2014 has 16,000 km and recently sometimes when I start my car and take off down the road the snow mode light in the top left of my display will flash for a minute or two then go solid. I checked the fluid in the trunk and it is below the low line right on the circular ridge on the reservoir.

I was thinking small top up might solve it... But my question is... Where did my fluid go?

Top it off, but if that keeps it up, bring it to the dealer. they are covering all AWC pumps to 100k miles or 10yrs, if the pump is bad, doesn't matter if you are the 2nd owner or 5th owner, etc... Good luck.

The light flashes casue the fluid/motor are still to cold to operate, happens daily on mine. I live in Winnipeg Canada and temps are -20C to -40C.

Everything shrinks when cold, except water.

Actually, that's not exactly true. Water also contracts as it gets colder, and only expands after it freezes and turns to ice.

Warning wall of text:

I believe it does this due to a combination of things. There was a service bulletin for an ecu reflash which I imagine your car came with or maybe you had it in to be done. But this reflash as far as I understand was to help prevent the pump from basically burning itself out in cold weather because it couldn't reach the pressure it needed as the fluid was too viscous and would just keep running until it was able to achieve this. The flashing you are seeing was added in this update to show that the pressure had not been reached. I could be recalling incorrectly, but this is how I have understood it.

I can say I just had my pump replaced a couple weeks ago under the new extended warranty as it failed outright just before christmas and threw an AWD system service required warning at which point the mode light was not displayed. As an Ontario driver, on the colder days it will still flash a few times as the car starts moving before it reaches pressure and stays solid.

Things to watch out for, is if you start noticing the mode light flashing after you have been driving for a while, or through the warmer months after driving for a bit. For about a year before the pump failed on me outright, I would notice the mode light start flashing at random times driving down the 401 on a perfect sunny/dry day. Other times I would go days without seeing it flash, this over time happened more frequently until the pump finally failed.

Hope that helps!

Mine does this in the winter quite frequently. Most of the time it was really cold weather -20C and below. There were even days where after startup it was so cold I couldn't even shift it into manual mode. I saw a little bit of green fluid under my rear end and the techs at Richmond Hill Mitsubishi couldn't find anything wrong with it. Lets hope they replace the pump soon, but I think the warranty was entended to 130,000km.
