What happens when the SST goes
I had a thought about our cars (and Evo MRs for that matter) and what happens to them if the transmission goes out of warranty. So in 5+ years, the car will be worth <$15,000 and for some reason the SST needs to be replaced. So now it's worth <$5000. Who is going to invest $10,000 in a car that isn't worth all that much? I'm sure not going to, it would get sold or traded in. Would anyone even buy it? What would a dealer do with a car that they couldn't make a profit on? Would it go to a junkyard? Maybe once it is in Mitsubishi's hands they can service it and not replace an entire unit, bringing the cost down? Just a random thought.
That is a very good question. I would hope that the more SST units that are available or the more vehicles that utilize the SST transmission the cheaper it will become to replace if a replacement becomes necessary.
This is nothing new. This happens to high mileage German luxury cars all the time. Mercedes and BMW have very high repair costs, and the most expensive ones tend to depreciate quick. Yet, it still costs a lot to fix the old ones. Either some shadetree mechanics will figure out how to "fix" one for cheap, or the cars will get parted out. Necessity is the mother of invention and if their are a lot of broken SSTs out there one day and a lot of people intent on keeping them running, the market will find a way to make it happen.

.we should all start doing some research on getrag.
i doubt they built a transmission that "can not be repaired".
the problem is that the mitsu service guys do not yet know how to work on them.

Right. It's not that they aren't repairable, it's just as of right now if something goes wrong they are going to replace the whole thing.
At that time, I'm hoping there are more qualified techs to install stronger clutch packs that will hold more power and last longer. SSP already has stronger clutch packs, but I'm uncertain of their longevity. There is a correlation of more power and additional clutch wear so, we really can't tell how long these are suppose to last.
Either way, if it really comes down to replacement. Switching to a GSR 5speed manual or MR SST tranny would probably be the our best bet.

The transmission from the 3000GT VR-4 is also made by Getrag and guess what? Mitsu techs won't rebuild it either. Its not just about techs not knowing what to do, its part of the licensing agreement companies put together that won't allow them to be taught, making it a pull and replace only. Nissan will tell you the same thing if you bust up one of those fancy Ricardo transmissions in the GT-R.
Great point I have thought about this too. I hope
know what there doing with this sst though.
In Australia we have a 10 year warranty so it could get EXPENSIVE for them if these sst boxes become unreliable!
Wait and see I guess. I have 10000 kms and it has been nothing short of perfect
