Evo X BOV Question
Evo X BOV Question
Quick question about the Evo X Bov....
I'm looking to grab a used one and was wondering if it's any beneficial to get a crushed one. I know it will hold more boost, but is that even necessary for minor mods on a RA?

I guess Im a bov noob what is a crushed one? I take it makes the bov stronger? I would say an X bov should be fine on the RA unless you get really crazy. I plan on picking one up next week if i can find one for sale for a good price.
The following user would tell you that it works, because he has one:

The IX's work great as well.
Crushing is something the DSM guys used to do, when technology was not nearly as advanced as it is today. They would take a tap, or something similar, and "crush" the top of the BOV to compress the spring. This would cause the BOV to hold more PSI before opening the waste -gate. However, its not perfect, in that you cant go "ok x amount of PSI is y amount of crushing". If you are looking for that sort of accuracy, maybe check out an upgraded waste-gate actuator?

the metal ones from the IX and X don't need to be crushed if you're just running stock boost. i know the IX has been tested to hold between 25-30 psi with no issues.
true story, lol, remember we are still talking about using an X valve here, just adding some extra compression to the spring. and for those interested, i'll share what i said in our pm conversation here:
Its not a necessity, but it definitely holds the boost better when you start getting into the higher pressures.
If you already have an upgraded bpv, there's no reason to get another one, but if you are still running the stock plastic one, there's no reason not to get the crushed evo valve if it is an option. Its not going to cause any problems with the car whether you run crushed or not, that all depends on the tuning, more like it'll be there if you need it but will otherwise function just like anything else.

I had a stock 9 BOV on my RalliArt with an EVO X turbo and all was fine. Had an EVO X customer on the dyno with a crushed stock BOV and it was getting some surge at part throttle. I gave him my uncrushed BOV to try and see if that was the cause. His car got better and he left with mine, he'll get me one to replace it later. Now with his crushed BOV on my RalliArt I get some stutter and hesitations at part throttle that I didnt have before.
Bottom line, dont crush a stock (metal) BOV unless you really need to (trying to hold over 30 psi).
Also, a more correct terminology would be to call it a "smooshed" BOV. You barely smoosh it in a vice to do it correctly when you do it. Everyone calls it a "crushed" BOV and some kids will really take that to heart and smash the hell out of it.
