Research : How to take care of SST
Hi, guys:
I am new to this forum , name is Kim. Fist, I'd like to thank everyone for sharing great information and giving various suggestions. Recently, I've been reading manny of threads about twin clutch transmission problems... So I decided to do a research about the best way of driving that causes least wearing to our SST.
I made a multiple choice for you guys :
What is the best way of driving that causes least wearing to our SST ?
A. Normal--D mode. (Drive it like an Auto)
B. Sport ---D mode.
C. Normal--Paddle Shift with "auto" down shift by computer.
D. Normal--Paddle Shift with "controlled" down shift by driver.
E. Sport----Paddle Shift with "auto"down shift by computer
F. Sport----Paddle Shift with "controlled" down shift by driver.
G. Sport----Manual Mode (shifter in "-,+" position) with "auto"down shift by computer
H. Sport----Manual Mode with "controlled" down shift by driver.
Thanks for looking at my question, and please post your answers. I will try to collect as many information as I can and hopefully I can post a thread that summarizes all the threads about how to take care of our SST, just give you guys a more clear look of them .
Last, appologize for my English ... XD

I drive normal auto for the first 2 minutes of my commute to warm up the trans.
The rest of the time I'm in Manual sport.
Normal auto is said to be the hardest of the SST especially in stop and go traffic where its changing gears constantly.

^^ All of the above.
Don't baby it. It's a performance car, with a high performance gearbox. Don't drive it economy style in normal auto - as the SST is programmed to slip, and that slip is slowly degrading/wearing those clutches out quicker.
I also find that in normal auto mode it tends to upshift far, far earlier than any sensible person should. At 60 km/h (or ~30mph) it's already in sixth gear, lugging that motor along putting a big strain on it.

^yeah.
My Lovely Bride only uses normal/auto and it (silently) makes me nuts on the few occasions she drives me...
ONE DAY we will crack access to the control s/w and change the shift logic.
One Bright Shiny Day.

In sport manual mode, I found that I can easily deal with the jerking problem at low speed, also the car that I used to drive before this was a manual. Thats why I started driving in sport..
And yes. 30mph in 6 gear is normal... specially when you are going in to high way,,, accelerate it to 100kmh from 60kmh and that is all at 6th gear,,, , Auto Normal mode is just uncomfortable....
kinda replicating auto sport modehave noticed that when i first start the car in auto sport mode, for the first minute or so, the sst runs a different shift map (ie shifts lower in the rev range) and then when up to temp, it changes normally
I always drive it in manual. Rev into the mid range to shift it. And in stop and go traffic, I drive it like a stick, i.e. don't creep or anything, esp on the uphills. It just wears down the clutch.
I have 72000 miles on mine so far, everything 100%, plan to just run it into the ground and get something new in a few years. No sense in babying it. I honestly think it drives better, shifts better, when driven hard.

From day dot I have driven mine in Sport Manual mode ALWAYS. I shift early and go easy until it is warm, and try not to do any full load pulls in 4th gear or higher under 3k rpm EVER. I know that is normally to keep the engine happy, but i don't trust the stock gearbox tune (as it allows slip 'randomly' when coming on boost). I have gotten the trans overheat warning twice in mine, and both of the times was spirited street (stop/start) driving in normal/auto (albeit after travelling 300km(200mi) on a trip.) Because of this, i have never let it 'drive itself' since the second time i got the warning.
On a side note, the reason why i (and possibly other people in similar positions) purchased this car to start with instead of an evo 7-9, was both the age/build quality and the twin-clutch. Btw i am definately NOT an auto guy, i HATE autos and have had 5 manual performance cars prior to the Lancer. But, this gearbox (even with its failures and short-comings over the 'evo sst box'(God knows why they didn't put s-sport and LC in the RA(did somebody say extra $$$ for an evo?))) is quite intuitive and physically performs almost flawlessly when driven in manual mode.
In traffic, i drive as if i had a manual with a ridiculously heavy cable clutch (not moving unless i can completely engage the gear, no half-throttle, full manual sport mode shifting)
