Oil 5W-30 and oil filter M1-104

Just checking to see if I bought the right products. The oil is oil 5w-30 EXTENDED PERFORMANCE and oil filter M1-104 EXTENDED PERFORMANCE. I bought 4.4L + 1L of the oil. The 4.4L jug was less than $30. Not bad :)

I wasn't sure what the extended performance was and how it was different from the regular 5W-30.

Oh, and I have a '09 Ralliart. Thanks.

You bought the right oil, but I usually stay away from the extended stuff. It's getting hard to find the normal fully synthetic stuff now... (Green Cap).

I usually shop at Walmart and get the Jug and I just buy a couple filters whenever I go to Mitsubishi. I switch from OEM and Mobil one oil filters.

I just called my dealership garage and they said I should've bought the 5W-20. What the hell, i was pretty sure it was the 5W-30.

So it's 5W-20?

K so now I'm completely confused. I read this forum and some others. A lot of people recommend Mobil 1 0W-40. A lot of people also recommend Amsoil 0W-30. Then again, the standard seems 5W-30.

Sigh... too complicated. I don't mind paying extra for the oil. What do I do? Keep in mind, it's summer and I'll probably change the oil again beginning of November.

5w30, 10W30 , 0w30 , 10w40, 20w50 they all have their places to be in,,, you tailor your oil to your power, temps, and driving habbits.

Manual recommends 5w-30 or 0w-30. Stick with those and you can't go wrong.

I recently put in the new Castrol Edge 5w-30 synthetic oil and it runs great!

So u have one of those smart dealers too like alot of us. 5W20 is for the NA Lancer(non-turbo like the GTS) 5W30 is what came in the RA from the factory and is recommended. I've seen some guys use 0W30 in their RAs.

K so do I have it right? 0W-30 is recommended when temperatures are colder. Regular summer temperatures go best with 5W-30. Right? Right? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight?

Yes. Stick with 5w-30. It's the best all-around oil and also what mitsubishi recommends in the manual.
Turbo motors (like yours) can be especially hard on oil, so even with a good synthetic, if you do an average mix of highway and city, I'd change it at 3000-4000 miles. The "extended" oils you can take to 5000 miles. Anything over might be ok but since the manual states the maximum interval between oil changes should be 5000 miles, you might as well keep to that to maintain your warranty.

Like the others said, I'd stick with the 5W30. Personally I like to stick to OEM filters, but I'm sure others will disagree.

About the recommendation of 0W40, it would probably be recommended for people who track their cars as the higher strain on the engine would probably cause the oil to thin to about a 30 weight. Better than a 30 thinning to a 20.

actually, ralliart came factory filled, in 09, with petroleum based non-syn oil. have to double check on the new ones. just a little fyi. if you read your manual, it should say something along the lines of "to protect the life of your engine/turbocharger synthetic oil is highly recommended, blah blah" but it is technically not required by the manufacturer. i dont know what kind of idiot would want to run the car without synthetic, but theres usually always at least one in every crowd right?

brads09lancerGT May 25, 2010 09:08 PM

^ I know Chi;) I said it came with 5W30 not anything about synthetic. I still don't understand why it came from the factory without synthetic:confused:

Besides the type of oil he bought didn't anyone notice he only bought 4.4L of oil??

Our cars need 5.5L or Quarts of oil.

laksman91 May 25, 2010 11:17 PM

^ I need less than 5 quarts for my changes.. and I get some left over.
