rota grid 18x8.5 fitment issue

Hi,

After making a judgement call based on the fitment guide on evom.... i purchased the grids in 18x8.5 +44 with a 235/40/18 tire.

When trying to fit today i was told this would NOT fit the car without touching the rear controller arm....

They did mention this might fit with a 5mm spacer, but there would not be enough tread to bolt them on correctly :S

In AUS spacers are illegal and would be a ..... risky alternative, has anyone delt with this offset before? is it possible without a spacer? was my fitter a noob?

Thanks in advance!

I have those wheels Also and no problems here. I do have 5mm spacers on the rear did this just to make them flush. The 5mm spacer is the biggest I would go on stock studs no issues with the spacers either got the from wheel dude.

No I'm running 225/45/18s for tires and my offset is 44 on my grids. U can probly do 8mm spacers but if I was going to do that to be on the safe side I would get extended studs.

So today i took the car to another mainstream fitter,

They informed me the fronts are now illegal and stick out past the guard and are not flush.

The backs fit but there is only a few mil of clearance and if the tire changes shape it will rub...

Whats going on...

2 shops, 2 different responses.....

I went to quick fit tires on my way home and got them to put it on infront of me, the front stick outs no more then 5-8mm... how ever if i was ever pulled over for something the cops would notice it.

All i can say is the ralliart fitment guide thats floating around the net is not 100% accurate, im a fool for trying it.

Either way, +44 is NOT flush as specified.

So your all aware... this is the ruleset for majority of AUS:

Snippet from mainroads/gov.
The rims and tyres must not protrude beyond the
bodywork of the vehicle, including flares, when viewed
from above with the wheels facing straight ahead. If the
vehicle was originally constructed with a portion of the
wheel protruding, the wheels must not protrude further
than originally constructed.
The tyre to rim fitting and the tyre to rim combination
must be in accordance with the Tyre and Rim Standards
Manual published by the Tyre and Rim Association of
Australia. Reputable tyre retailers should have this
information and be able to advise on the correct
combinations.
All rims fitted to an axle must be of the same diameter,
width and offset. They must not have a circumferential
weld other than that which attaches the outer rim to
the centre. All rims must have stud hole pitch circle
diameters suitable to the hub. Wheel nut tapers must
be appropriate to the wheel and must engage the thread
of the wheel studs for at least the same length as the
nuts provided by the vehicle manufacturer.
Slotted and elongated stud holes are not permitted

The fitting of spacers or adaptors between wheels and
hubs, additional to those provided by the vehicle
manufacturer, is not permitted. The tyre and rim must
not foul wheel arches or suspension components under
any conditions. Steering limit stops must not be adjusted
to reduce the turning circle in order to allow the fitting
of the alternative rims and tyres.
The tyres must have a tread depth of at least 1.5mm on
every part of the tyre that touches the road and not have
any apparent defect that is likely to make the vehicle to
which they are fitted unsafe. It is not permitted to fit
tyres that have been treated by recutting or regrooving
unless the tyre has been marked by the original
manufacturer as ‘suitable for recutting or regrooving’.

your flush may differ from what other peoples definition of what flush is.. the rim sitting out by 5mm give or take is pretty much flush to me..

It took me 10mins to make a decision, but if you stand next to the car it appeared obvious...

Sure you could run them and you may never have a problem... but its a risk i cant take right now.

I have Rota Grids & 235's, with the rear fenders rolled... When I had 5mm spacers on the rear, one side would rub a little on bumps. I figured it just needed to be rolled a little better. I took off the spacers and just haven't had time to go back to get it re-rolled on one side. Works fine with no spacers.

What tires? Some 235's run wider, more like 245's. Z1 StarSpecs come to mind. Other possibility is you did not get what your ordered.

Wheres a good place to get extended studs. How long do I get them or are extended studs a standard length?
