I changed my '95 GLXi (1.8) coupe to a manual, it was the best thing I've ever done. The difference in power was HUGE. I'd suggest getting a 1.8 box if you can but don't take my word for it that it will bolt straight up.
I was told by a Mitsubishi dealer that it was impossible, would be cheaper to sell my car etc. They quoted me $4000 for a gearbox alone.
See if you can find out what the part number for your drive shaft is, then see what the part number is for the manual 1.8. If it's the same you're in business, just source a box from a wrecker, buy a new clutch and you're away.

Have you done any conversions from level 10? their tq converter is $500....not too bad, but it would be nice to see how it does installed.

Mate why dont you go for a engine conversion at the same time. Just a thought, and in the end going to be a better package.

Evoposer - trust me mate ditch the auto. The car just feels so much better... the best thing about Lancers is their chuckability. Drop it down into second, turn in and plant your foot - instant power when you want it. Sure some drag autos might be quicker but they're made for going in a straight line. Do you want to drive your car or do you want to DRIVE your car Good luck drifting with an auto!
I think I paid about $700 for the box and about $150 for the clutch from memory. I'll probably have my SOHC 1.8 engine up for sale soon too if you are looking for an upgrade without the insurance hassles.

Mate I can not see that getting the gearbox and the 1.8L engine will cost more than $2000 second hand. It will be a very easy upgrade and one you will enjoy but not get unwanted attention from the insurance companies.
