What other mods can I do???

Hey guys,

I just got my set of extractors installed and they are...ok, However I have a sneaking suspicion that my intake is restricting me alot. So, already booked it in to get a stainless steel pipe made up and a new bigger pod air filter fitted. So i'll be interested to see if that helps. Also, im using this piping that I found under the house, i think its ag tubing or something, but it has holes all through it. i went to the hardware store and thats all they seem to have. Would the holes in the piping make much of a difference??

Anyway, the reason for this thread.... I need more power : What other *reasonably cheap mods* (dont say turbo or supercharge, cos i just dont have that sorta cash.) can I do??

I have;

4-2-1 Extractors
Pod Air Filter
2" Exhaust system with SuperCat Stainless Steel Muffler
'Low' King Springs
Whiteline Rear sway bar

I was thinking of a fuel pressure regulator, but i have heard mixed opinions on them.

PLEASE HELP

P.S I own a 2002 CE Lancer (1.8)

If you go to the a dyno and get me a plot of:

1) Power
2) Torque
3) Air fuel ratios
4) Vacuum
5) A run with the O2 sensor in and one without it (The Dyno's one, not the cars one!)
6) A run with everything correctly hooked up and one with a vacuum hose from the throttle body taken off.

Then we can tell you what's restricting power.

But in the case where you don't want to spend that much time on a dyno, then either chip it or get a programmable ECU for it, and take off the throttle body and manifold, and polish the inside until it shines.

If a chip/ECU is too expensive, get it to a dyno and advance timing.

i have identical mods to you and i did this and it gave me a nice little gain and sounds great.i used 3" piping from clark rubber.if you use steel just remember it heats up real easy and holds the heat which kinda defeats the purpose of having a cai.
also try getting a 2.25" down and flex pipe put on after your extractors.it gives a good gain also.

not true. although steel may retain heat, the air passes through so quickly that it isn't affected by the temperature of the tubing. Similar to passing your hand through fire quickly without getting burnt With cai, it's all about where the air is pulled from.......Plus, I guarantee you the a smooth stainless steel pipe will flow much better than the ribbed tubing you have

I really wouldn't bother with the new inlet pipe for performance reasons... Feel free to do it for the ***** looks. If you want a real increase, you're gonna have to look at the engine itself rather than the ancilliaries attached to it. You could talk to Tighe Cams about a camshaft small enough to get an improvement without needing to change to aftermarket management, but really thats where you'll end up needing to lay down some dollars. Keep an eye out for a reasonably modern programmable ECU on the 2nd hand market, mid-range items like haltech E6Ks come up pretty often. Once you've got that expense out of the way you can look at running decent profile camshafts and then perhaps talk to JHH or Liddles to get your head ported.

water isnt a problem unless the filter gets submerged and i know the ribbed piping is a problem but ive heard mixed opinions on the steel.

Ok what you possibly need to be looking at is getting a larger throttle body at 55mm and have the inlet polished and matched only thing is that it is not going to be cheap in fact there is no such thing as a cheap mod sure it may be cheap to start off with and you will of saved some $$$ but I will guarentee that you will pay for it big time later on it also depends on what you want to achieve if you just want to breathe more life into her and give her a little more ompff on the street then a really good set of 4-1 race design extractors 21/4" mandrel bent ( not as expensive as it sounds) with a larger flexi pipe a big flow cat and a free flowing muffler like a lukey at 21/2" will sound hell nice and will give you extra hp then if you want to step it up a bit then get a real cold air induction kit then the t/b then a cam (no computor really needed) and a rising fuel pressure regulator ( an increase in air means an increase in fuel ) whne you have done all of that that will give you a really great fast car and loads of street cred

there are more things you can do but by the sounds of things this is probably all that you should be looking at the great thing with N/A mods is that you can get it a piece at a time and it all still works very well just make sure that when you get the bits that they are all made by the same people and they will work together and compliment each other I have been using RPW gear and have thrashed the hell out of my car and still getting great klm out of it with no problems at all

just do a bit of research into who you get to fit out your car first before spending the money

Well, thanks for all the great replys! I appreciate every single one.

Im thinking of trying to get my intake and extraction to its full potential. Im getting a pipe made up for my pod to replace the plastic one. Aswell at looking at ways of feeding some pipes from the front into the pod.

I am thinking a rising fuel pressure regulator will be the next mod after that.

chowetime what mods have u done to your car? to gain 137hp? sounds cool. Where abouts are u from also?

I have writen up a more detailed bit about the car in the what's your ride bit were there are more details but I will give a briefer version here

4-1 race design extractor @21/4" mandrel bent
hi flow cat convertor @21/2" with s/s cannon
K&N pod located at front bar
cold air induction kit
55mm throttle body with restrictor plate removed and polished and port matched
stage 1 cam
adjustable cam gear
rising fuel pressure reg at 45psi
semi ceramic clutch ( I broke mine it could not handle the extra HP)
a GReddy emanage
rear brake converssion from drums to disc and up graded the fronts to 276m running ebc green stuff

I think there is more but can't remember
I am getting ready for stage 2 which will be minor head work stage 2 cam injectors and valve springs and heaps of tuning I believe that 150+hp is on the way and should be able to do sub 15's on the strip

all the work that has been done has been done by RPW in Perth
