re: tuned @ AMS

Hi all,

I recently got an 04 SSL. The previous owner had the car tuned with AMS's stage 1 and 2, which he had receipts of. However, on top of that, he told me that he only did half of stage 3, which was, according to him, the comp 280's. He said that the car was tuned for 1.6 bar, which I thought was a bit too high for the stock turbo. On WOT pulls it would go up as high as 1.67 bar. I don't know if thats where it spiked or held as I only checked with the peak button. Also with the cams, it would stall most of the time whenever i let off the clutch with a/c on. With a/c off it seems fine. Please let me know if this is safe or should i do a tune and lower the boost. Thanks!

p.s. the following are the mods that i know of for your reference:

• AMS FMIC
• AMS lower IC pipe
• AMS MBC
• KN air filter
• AMS cat back w/ HFC
• Comp 280/280 cams
• 255lph fuel pump
• Exedy twin disk clutch
• NGK BPR7ES Spark Plugs x 4
• AMS 3" full stainless downpipe
• AMS ECU reflash

You should definetly get retuned for the cams if it is not tuned for them.

1.6 bar is around 23 psi, an many people are running that much on the stock turbo with 93 octane so i think you are fine there.

Yea, I've also driven it to toronto this past wkend and they only have 91 up there. So i just put in 1.5 bottles of stp octane booster (only reputable name i can find) per tank, and i ran about 2 tanks of that. I can definitely feel the ecu pulling timing as there was no power at all and wanted to stall all the time even with a/c off. Now the engine seems to run a little rougher. No big knocks or whatever, but i do feel some very very slight vibrations on the gas pedal during part throttle. don't know if thats normal or not. Also i haven't had a chance to change the tcase and tranny fluids yet and i don't know when the guy last changed it. But seeing that the motor oil he had before was all black i don't think he's changed the gear oils in a long while. I already ordered MT-90 and some diaqueen. What is a good price for labor to get those changed? Thanks!

Octane booster does not really work from what I hear...If you have 91 in your car I wouldnt get into it...

From what Ive been told when the octane booster states "raises 10 points" its not really raising it 10octane up Example: 93 to 103... it raises it to 93.1

I wouldnt mess around with them. And 23psi is fine. Do you have head studs?

If he put cams in the car after we tuned it then it needs to be retuned. If the car was tuned on 93 octane you should not get into it on 91

Yea, I've been running 93 ever since i got the car except where they don't have it. Do I need headstuds? This is my DD right now and I rarely do WOT full boost pulls. Maybe few times a week. I read that the stock head bolts are strong enough and if i do the ARP headstuds with the 1x1 method it warps the head and blows the headgasket? I'm familiar with BHG cuz I used to drive the mk3 supra lol.

Doing the ARP's one by one when done right will not warp the head, that sounds like a big case of internet misinformation to me.

We have been doing it like that for years without losing a gasket.

I would recomend head studs and to be tuned.

Most cars shouldn't require 8's at that power level. The next thing we need to know is if the car was tuned with or without the cams as that dictates what you should do next.

I was wondering on colder plugs myself. How often should you be changing plugs with these mods?

Hi Eric can you PM me the price for valve springs, retainers and arp headstuds + labor? Btw are those supertech springs and retainers from the swap meet still lying around?

need tune for cams. 23lbs is fine as long as it is tuned for that. Some cars can handle it and so cant. As long as you are not getting knock and the ecu is not pulling timing then you should be fine at 23lbs. Bad part is that you would not be able to tell that unless you logged it.
