We use many tools to do the job but I'm assuming your refering to the AMS Timing belt tensioner tool.

It is called the valve spring compressor tool. There are 2 types of these tools. The first is the one that mounts to the head so that they can be changed without removing the head from the block. The cylinder is pressurized to ensure that the valves do not fall into the combustion chamber. Once that is done the spring can be compressed and the retainers removed with the tool. The second tool looks like a giant C that clamps to the head when it is not attached to the block. One side of the tool is on the valve and the other is on the valve spring, then it can be compressed and the retainers can be removed releasing the valve spring. It is easier to do this process with the head off the block. Please let me know if you need further information.
