Your so wrong ! all Corollas on all trim levels come with the same 127hp VWTI(comparable to Honda's VTEC) engine ! the Toyota Corolla is the automotive "benchmark" for all others to follow, it is compared to a baby Mercedes and not even the Honda Civic has that title in the automotive engineering world, the only problem is that they have older more conservative engineers(in their 60's and are like Admiral Yotomato !) and their styling is dated and this is why their cars don't sell well to the younger crowds. The Corolla has made Toyota as of February 2004 the No. 2 auto maker in world after GM who is is bed with them also and the first non American auto maker to do so.
