My '05 sucks...problems?
My '05 sucks...problems?
Well I just got a used '05 last week and wanted to get to the track for some baselines and see how it compared to the '03 I traded in. It wasn't a very good night to say the least. The '05 is stock except for an Injen intake and upper IC pipe that was on the car when I got it. It was a hot and humid night here in South Florida as usual this time of year. So here is the bad news:
2.09..........60'
5.951........330
9.206.........1/8
78.49..........mph
14.415......1/4
93.67........mph
I know the 60' is terrible but I am trying to get used to the rev limiter. I pulled 1.7-1.8 60's all day in my '03 on the stock clutch so the new car is a little adjustment.
For a comparison against my '03 with MBC,TBE, fuel pump, panel filter, and Dynoflash in very similar conditions.
1.803
5.417
8.428
83.16
13.224
103.08
My big concern is where is the MPH? I know intakes without any tune can hurt performance but I am missing 5-7mph to other stock '05's. Is it possible that the intake and hot air is causing me to have a lot of timing pull? Even if that is the case I still think I am missing some power. I will check for boost leaks and maybe throw in a compression check just to be sure. Any ideas or thoughts would help.

Well your times are not very good in the 2005, but honestly your times were not very good in your 2003 either. I think you need to practice on your shifting and launching. Maybe you should let another EVO owner drive your car to see what they can run. Now if it's still running 14s then I can see your point. But I just think it's too hasty to start thinking something is wrong with your car, when it's pretty obvious you yourself have not really got the hang of drag racing.
Well I don't think I am the greatest drive by any means but I think I do OK. even with better driving I don't see the car picking up over a full second and 7mph. I will try and get a drive in another 05 and see how they compare.
I do think something is up. My friend just took his 05 to Moroso(South Florida) and went 13.5@98?mph). I know he went 13.8 and I believe the mph was 98. It is bone stock and he let his brother drive it who has never driven an all wheel drive car before. So, definitely take a look for boost leaks, etc. Almost sounds like someone played with the boost solenoid and your running about 11psi of boost. The only reason I posted is I'm in S. Florida and we just ran this car last week at Moroso. I'm sure it is a simple problem, don't worry
Actually, your 1/8th-mile MPH is not far off at all. On my stock time listed below, I only hit an 8.4 at 80mph with a 1.92 60' in which I also had trouble with the 5k limiter. The fact you hit 78+ mph with a worse launch and worse weather conditions means that you have solid power through the first 3 gears, but then you absolutely lose it all on the top end. Typically, when you see a major loss of power in 4th, it's due to knock. It rears its ugly head at higher rpms in 4th in hot conditions, and the untuned Injen intake is probably exacerbating the problem. To only pick up 15mph in the back 1/8th indicates a significant problem somewhere.
I'd try a few things:
1) Re-check all vaccuum and IC connections for leaks
2) Put the intake back to stock
3) Disconnect the 5k limiter for a few launches just to see how much a 1.7-1.8 60' helps
Be aware that your MPH is actually 9-11 mph off, not 5-7, although it may be hard to duplicate that mph in the middle of summer...

since you traded in for a used car, it looks like someone unloaded their evo w/ problems to the dealer. 93mph is way low for even a bone stock 03 evo but you got a 05 so something is terribly wrong. Your mph should not be that low even with the MAF misreadings that open filters give off. I would say first step in troubleshooting is getting a boost gauge.

I used a friends boost guage last night and just hooked it up through the window. Seems like there is a boost leak for sure since the car will only hit 18psi and falls to 15psi in 4th gear which would be low even for an '03. I was also low on coolant so maybe the car was running hotter than it should have been. I think the boost leak along with the untuned intake are causing issues. I think Warrtalon is right about the 4th gear stuff because last night when we were checking the boost the car just feels like a slug in 4th gear. Looks like I have some work to get done this weekend. Thanks for all the input so far.

this is the exact reason why i would never buy a car like the evo from a dealership...

I was just reading this thread and wanted to compliment you on the use of the word exacerbating. I haven't heard that word in 3 years, lol.
