Some drag newbie ques??
Hey guys i think im going to head down to the drags soon and i have a coupld of questions. First What do u guys do about the water box and trying to warm up your tires being how its all wheel drive. Do you just go around it or wut. And second should i use my toyo ra1 radials or should i use my michelin psps wut would have better tracktion. Thanx in advance
No water box, avoid it at all costs. Depending on how much power you are making (or mods you have), I would go with the sticker rubber and have them at 38 to 40 psi. Take as much weight out of the car (spare and other junk, seats are optional) and have a half tank of gas in her.
Just drive through the water box, the car need some wheels spin for your trans good, do some revs to heat up the clutch, stock tires are one of the best unless you're making too much power (I ran stock tires on my GT35r and got 1.6 to 1.8 60' no problem). Non of the tires you mentioned will give you any significant over stock.
Don't listen to LITE SPD. It's not correct, 38 to 40 psi is too much for the tires pressure at the drag. I don't know why he told you that.
Start with 30 psi or lower.

And why wouldn't you want more psi in the tires. You already have tremndous grip off the line, but lose some speed on the big end because of awd. The less psi you have in the rubber the more friction you create. In theory you would lose top end speed because of friction. I have never raced an evo at the track, I'm just putting 2 and 2 togther on this.

30-40 psi is too much on the side wall, you want lower pressure to allow for some ammount of diflection to aborb some of the shock aswell as to limi wheel hop.
on most track it's impossible to avoid the water box just drive through it no real big problem.

I go through water box everytime and dont lower my tire pressure. I have cut 1.6's on the stock clutch no problems. I think its better to spin the tires than kill my transmission. Keep in mind I have 290-300 hp and it wont work with high hp cars as they might just keep spinning. I know when I launch my GSX (600-700hp) I take a different aproach and drop my tire pressure and slip the clutch best I can to not cause wheel spin but its pretty tricky. For the evo I rev to about 5k (disconnected the rev limiter) and dump it. No clutch smell and if the tires spin which they will you dont get that bad of drive train shock.
I have been racing the evo for the last 1 1/2 years and been through many different tires pressures and been avoided waterbox sometimes and found it didn't make much of a different. Like a member mentioned above, some tracks it's impossible to avoid the waterbox. For a stock to light mods evo, 30 psi worked best for me. I ran up to 35 psi and got none of the good launches. Now with my current power on stock tires, I need 25 psi or lower.
By the way, if you run 38-40 psi on your GTO, you'll probably stand spining at the line for a while before take off especially on your stock tires. You need low pressure tires on the back and/or slick.
For evoracer32,
the RA1 tires are good for road race but probably not the best for the drag. I'll say use stock. I'm on stock tires for over 400 hp and still got decent launches between 1.6 to 1.8 and launching the GT35r is much much harder.
