Do 5SPD IX's Have To Shift Into 5th?
Fridoon, shifting at 7k isn't an issue, just when you get in 4th, leave it in 4th..your car will run a slower ET and you'll lose MPH if you shift into 5th regardless of how fast you shift, it's not neccessary for you at your power level.
Like I said before, it depends on how fast your car is (how high the traps are), but usually the shift costs you more time than it's worth.
The "What if I shift fast into 5th?" part gives me a chuckle. That's the slowest shift possible, and 5th is a dog for the most part.
There's nothing wrong with going past 7k - we still make good power. You make as much at 7500 as you do at 6000, but you don't avoid 6000rpm do you?

Funny I came across this thread cause I had a few little fun runs with a buddies Stage 2 SRT and never really knew the gearing was so much different than my old 8. When I shifted to 5th at 105 or so I just about crapped myself and also no matter how fast I tried to get it into 5th, it seemed to never go in smoothly and seemed to scratch going in. Once I slowed my shifting down, it was fine.
I will be taking my car to the track next week so hopefully I can get some good times out of it while being stock. It ran right next to his SRT and sometime would jump out on it til I went to 5th. Next time I'll hold 4th gear longer.

Previous owner of my car had to grab 5th w/ a 35R and 474whp running 10.85 @ 123 due to the shift into 5th that was missed and basically caosted through the traps.
He ended up swapping a few gears out to allow it to run out in 4th.
Too bad i missed 4th on all 3 runs last Sun.
If i ever get it into 4th i think it'll hold out until about 140mph+

That's why I don't understand when people ask this question. It's going to be different for every car at different power levels. You think someone with a stock turbo that traps 118 is going to go into 5th at the same time with someone with a 35r trapping 130? Of course not. It's not like the guy with the 35r is limited to still shifting into 5th at that same point as the stock turbo and just rides 5th out until 130. lol

agree 100% - shifting into 5th on our cars SUCKS... u have to shift carefully and slow just to get it to go in when you have your RPMs high. Almost everyone i know w/ an EVO cant get the car to go into 5th "quickly" w/out lock out or grinding the hell out of it.

The 4-5 shift is definitely the worst, but I was able to get it to this speed out of necessity. This was due to having a 6spd and being at very high altitude where power peaks at 5300rpm and nosedives from there, so I shift around 6200 in each gear:
