First time to the track with the Evo- any advice?

I'm still relatively new to the Evo, especially drag racing it. I'm no stranger to the drag strip, so staging, the tree... that sort of stuff I'm OK with. It's the specifics about the car. Any secrets?

I'm planning on entering into the gamblers race - but I have no idea what a reasonable ET would be for my car and my driving.

It's a 2003 Evo, 3 Vishnu TBE, adj. cam gears, Samco boost hoses, and Vishnu Ecede tuning. And of course I run 93. Otherwise, stock clutch, OE Yokohamas....

Pic of the car: http://craigmking.tocsin7.com/images/Evo/Evo6.JPG

Advice? Tips?

I'm sort of telling myself I'll be happy if I make it into the 13s.

Thanks!

My guess 13.2 for your best run.

No $hit? I don't want to get my hopes up or anything - I was going to be happy with a 13.9!

To get near the 13.2.... what kind of launches are we talking? Any chance of just hitting it from idle and pulling times close to that? I'm weary about launching the car with the stock clutch and drivetrain on such sticky tires.

If you're on the stock clutch, I wouldn't recommend using the factory 2-step. You'll be slipping after a few launches.

Yeah, I've heard about the factory 2-step rev limiter, but I haven't used it yet. I'm in no hurry to test it out. Regardless, I wasn't planning on launching from much more than idle anyhow. I'd rather play it safe, so the car will get me to work next week.

The 2003 doesn't have a factory 2 step. It was probably flashed in when your car was tuned, though.

You can hit 12s with a good launch and shifting.

Wow... this is all very impressive to me. So with the mods I listed, and a mild launch, 12's are possible?!? I guess tomorrow will really be a surprise then! I'm still going to be happy with a timeslip in the 13s.

No, if you "launch" from idle, your times will be terrible. There is absolutely no reason to go to the drag strip if you're not going to launch it, because your whole time depends on the 60'. Going from idle in an Evo is a huge mistake and massive waste of time. You will hit 14s if you do that.

Well, but I've yet to hear anything reassuring me that if I do actually "launch" the car I won't toast the clutch, and/or compromise the drivetrain.

There are no assurances when racing - there's always a risk. If you aren't willing to assume any of that risk on your Evo that was built for racing from the factory, then I suggest not bothering. It will be embarassing running 14s with a modded Evo, and you won't be able to get a good dial-in time, since there will be no consistency.

Even if you don't launch, you can hurt the clutch or drivetrain with hard shifting. If you don't shift fast/hard, you'll be even slower.

Of course there's risk... I acknowledge that every time I go race. What I meant was, is there a "target" rpm to launch at that the stock clutch is still comfortable with?

Anyhow, the weather has cleared up and I'm heading out the door to the track! Got my fingers crossed for some 13s!

5500rpm. 13s would be weak for your setup - 12s are assured if you drive it hard.

I'm totally stock and i used the factory 2 step last night and pulled off a 13.17 with a 105 trap speed because i let off the gas a bit to soon. i have to take pics of my slips and figure out how to post them.

just my .02, but from talking to the dozen other Evos at the track last night ranging from 8s, IX's and MRs, I had more than one person tell me that I was safe to use the two step on my factory clutch. There was one guy there who was running his stock cluctch and had a stack of time slips to show he was just fine.

Anyway, hope you had fun last night, I know I did
