Red face Help me improve my driving skills and teach this nub some techniques?

well i decided that before i try to do all the crazy **** on my car (launching, power shifting, whatever), I should master the basics first...which is basically smoothly shifting the car (for now)

the roughest one is when shifting from 1st to 2nd...no matter how many times i tried, passangers (me included) always felt a little jerk or jerked at least a bit foward whenever i stepped on the clutch to shift...maybe it's cuz im shifting at too high of RPM or something, so when do you guys usually shift from 1st? i usually do it at 4k+...

besides the first gear, 2nd to 3rd is also kinda tricky...sometimes i do it so smooth that i feels like auto but others i get a little jerk...what's the best rpm to make the ride smooth? (again usually shifting at 4k+ rpm)

on the net, i usually read about how people "slip" or "dump" their clutch...i know how to disengage or engage a clutch but what's slipping/dumping?

btw...i drove my friend's infiniti g20 a while ago and his friction zone was SOOO short compared to evo (if i were to measure it, it was around an inch vs evo's 3-4 inches...) so i kept stalling cuz i couldn't get used to it...but i was thinking, if i got used to it, i can easily launch the car...so is there any mod or something i can do to reduce the friction zone? about how much would that cost (including labor)?
