Discussion of Evo drag racing best practices and no-nos

I am new to Evo's, but not new to drag racing. I have gotten my basically stock Mustang GT into the 13s. I now have a friend with an Evo and he would like to take it to the track. He has a life and a family and can't go very often to the track (hasn't been yet) and he doesn't have the time to be surfing Evo web boards.

Since I have no life and no family I have been nominated to do some pre-track research.

I am interested in viewing some dyno sheets of bone-stock Evos to get some insight into shift points.

I would also like to know how the ones running near 13 flat are launching. Do you run it to 6K and drop the clutch, or will a stock Evo even survive such treatment?

My friend asked me and my advice to him was to practice 5K RPM launches when ever he can, pre-track. Should he be more agressive, or does this risk his drive train?

Any help you guys can offer to a fellow drag racer would be appreciated. I would like to see my friend do his Evo proud the first time out. We may not get more than one time out this season.

So does everyone agree that 5500 RPM launches are OK for a day of racing (6 runs or so)?

Also, does any one have any dynos to post of a stock Evo?

I found 5000 is good enough. Also I have like 12 runs at the Track and my Clucth went out. So bewear speed and low et's cost. Other then that just have fun and enjoy.

The most important factor in draggin an evo is the launch. It's killer if you nail it, but really slows you down if you don't as the car falls out of boost. I've made 20+ passes already with the stock clutch and varying degrees of mods/tires. With stock tires and power, I got my best 60' and 330's by holding the rpms in the high 5000 rpm range and quickly slipping the clutch out. I got wheelspin in cold temps on the stock tires, but I would get consistent 1.80 60's. My best launch with stock power was the only launch where I smelled clutch (or maybe it was just tires, I'm not sure). I hit a 1.77 60' with an aggressive slip at near 6300 rpm.

When I first added more parts, I had the tires switched out for all seasons. Launching on the all seasons was a little different, because I got more wheelspin in hotter temps. On the all seasons, I couldn't get too much consistency because of the wheelspin. My 60' times varied from ~1.84 to 1.73. I got these times by rotating the throttle from 4500-5000 rpms until the second yellow, where I would get it to ~5300 and slip the clutch out. This technique worked for me, but was never too consistent. With the mods I had, I dynoed at 283 whp 305 trq.

I just got the stock advans back on and will be at Atco tomorrow. I have a more aggressive tune in the car right now (298 whp, 316 trq) so my times should come down a bit. I'll post an update after tomorrow. Still on stock clutch, it's been holding fine for me. I think the wheelspin helps preserve the clutch.

I haven't really tried messing with shift points. The gearing on this car is pretty low and works well on a stock car, even with the power falling off by redline. Right now I shift just a little over 7000 out of every gear. Good luck dragging your evo!

See this thread for some dyno graphs of cars in various states of tune, including some bone stock Evos...

I raced at Atco yesterday with the stock tires on the car. The problem with racing an awd at Atco is that you have no choice with the waterbox- you have to go through it. I spun the tires to dry them off after going through the waterbox. My 60' times weren't too great until the pro cars laid down tons of rubber later in the day. I went from 1.8s with tons of wheelspin and some wheelhop to low 1.7s, with my best time being 1.733. It took an aggressive slip in the high 5000 rpm range to get those times.

I've only got about 11 passes on my evo. Tried lots of different tecniques. I did my best 60ft (1.79) by holding it at 6000 rpm and pretty much dumping the clutch and hitting the throttle at the same time. 12.61 @ 109. stock tires 30 psi, dynoflash, AMS manual boost controller set to hold 19#, AMS 3"Cat back, 93 octane.
Stock airbox, filter, downpipe, etc.
