11.3's & 134mph for AMS EVO8

After a long time I finally took her to the track. After our 600whp pulls I was excited to let her rip! Let's just say that with any kind of launch the clutch is slipping. I launched her good (1.64 60') time and I spun the clutch and pegged the 8900rpm rev limiter in every gear. I let out in 3rd and 4th gear mulitiple times to try to get the clutch to grip but it wouldn't. All I could do was an 11.3 at 125mph. The only way the clutch would hold power was to roll off the line at idle basically. This resulted in an 11.4 sec pass at 134mph with a 2.16 60' time!! The car pulls like crazy and if I could come out of the hole on some boost it would pull a 135-136mph no problem.
The car is full weight and even had a bunch of extra crap in the car with me on these runs (laptop, fire extinguisher, extra helmet, extra wieband O2 sets, ect..). Last time I wieghed it was 3250 without me in it. Since then it has probably put on another 20lbs in parts, so lets say almost 3500lbs with me driving.

Mods.

AMS intercooler
AMS GT35R turbo kit
AMS cat-back exhaust
880 cc/min injectors
AMS Fuel rail
Walbro 255lph hp in tank pump
AEM EMS
AMS Race Head
HKS 272 cams
UR cam gears
AMS spec Ross pistons (stock bore - drop in)
Eagle Rods
ARP main-studs & head studs
Exedy Twin-disc metallic clutch
and that's about it.
Intake manifold and Throttle body is completely stock. Fuel system consists of the walbro pump, our fuel rail and injectors.. all the lines, filter and everything else is stock. Suspension is stock and these runs where done on the factory tires.
I should have some videos in a few days...

What kind of clutch you going to put on her to rectify the slippage probems. Would say great run but we all know you are disappointed and were shooting for a 10sec pass. Next time 10s will happen once you fix the clutch issue. Hopefully the other parts will stay intact once the clutch issue is resolved.Good luck!

I have a bunch of street driving and lots of dyno pulls. The clutch holds fine if you don't launch it (slip it) at the track. On the street under full power it holds great, but I'm making over 500ft-lbs of torque at the wheels and slipping at a drag strip just puts too heat and torque through it. This clutch will work great for 99% of EVO owners out there. Very driveable and holds up great to mods. I'm stepping up to the Exedy twin-disc carbon now. I'm pretty happy with the results, expecially the trap speeds, it shows how much power the car is putting down while still being capable of being an every-driver with A/C and all.

Martin,

I bought your Ross pistons, Eagle rods and ARP bolts.

I will start fitting these parts the comming weekend if everything goes according to plan. What did you do to the engine to get the correct piston to cylinder clerance? Just a hone or did you have to make a slight re-bore? What about torque for all the ARP bolts?

Thanks,

Thomas,
The EVO8 pistons we sell are a direct drop in, so piston to wall clearence should be already set (but always check to be sure anyways). Check the bore to make sure it's not out of round and that's is still in stock spec, and then just do a light hand hone (glaze break). The ARP hardware should come with torque specs but the head studs should be done in 3 steps, 40, 60, 85 ft-lbs using the moly lube they provide. I don't remember the main stud torque off the top of my head but I think it's around 50 ft-lbs, I'll check when I get in the shop. If you need any other help feel free to email me at martin@automotosports or tech@automotosports.com

Martin, your results are very promising! Keep that clutch from slipping and you may well be in the 10's!

Moving this thread to the drag racing forum.

Wow your car definitly has 10 potential, just look at Turbo Trix Trap Speed of 135MPH and they ran a 10.5. Wow pretty soon two EVOs will be in the 10s and pretty damn close at that. I can't wait to see who is the first to the 9s.

I was there to witness the event. First of all, the Evo just sounds down right mean! I personally saw the Evo make 2 passes. On both passes, you could tell that he was being gentle on the car..... and it still hit over 125 mph. There was also a customer of AMS that was posting similiar times on the stock block. The real kicker is that he also was having clutch issues. There is no doubt in my mind that they will be in the 10's as soon as they resolve these issues. Thumbs up to AMS .

AMS car is just sick, making tons of power as you can see with the trap speed. I believe his 1/8 mile trap was 102!
