Old owner, new (broken) car. Its great to be back!

Hello everyone,

I've been around the EVO/DSM community before. Finally got my hands on another one after a long time. In my 40's now, so those who are in the same age demographic know where im headed. This goal of the car this time around is making it functional with a useable powerband and little to no compromise on useability. Its going to be the stablemate to my 07 Hawkeye STi.

I'll give you guys the rundown on the subaru later but first I'd like to give some details on the EVO. Bought it as a non-runner, i got it running drove it around the block once and then the lifters which I was expecting to bleed down and soften up after fresh oil and some idling, did the opposite, chucked a rocker and blew the motor. I got a replacement motor already. Its going to be going in this week. But after driving the car around the block, I quickly realized its going to need a lot of stuff refreshed. I'd like to get an idea of what's the suggested 'must have' bushings and parts to do.

More details and pictures to be posted shortly. I would like to state, the goal of this car is 400whp(e85) w/full bolt-ons with capable coilovers for DD duties. My STi makes 400whp. From the stuff that came with the car, aside from the injectors which would probably need to be upsized, I think i should have most everything for the power aspect of the car, right? I'll do SD so I can VTA for the sounds.

Evo9 turbo just purchased after noticing the original turbo had loads of shaft play. seems like an ebay unit.
aftermarket o2 housing
full 3" turboback HKS Exhaust
Injen intake
HKS 272's
ARP studs
fuel pump/FIC 780cc
blown coilovers
ACT clutch
some rust--will be getting this repaired on the chassis legs

Thanks and looking to get everyone's feedback! FB sucks to document builds and stuff, hopefully this place isn't completely dead!

While I wait to get all my pictures and media together of the EVO, here is what ive done to the subaru. Its currently the DD. Makes a very conservative 310whp on 93 and 400whp on e85. I wanted it to be reliable, responsive and a fun street setup. Goal was to have a fun street car. I'm shooting for the same for the EVO.

Final modlist as of 10/2024
OEM block drop-in Cp pistons stock rods/bearings/crank
killerb Oil Pickup
arp head studs
Cobb Intake box/killerb 3" hard inlet
4" TMIC
G25-550 clone turbo(OEM turbo reworked)
ID1050's/AEM340
Denso IKH22 plugs 7 heat range
EBCS
XTD 6 puck Clutch w/LW flywheel
Lachute equal length header
3" Blitz Nur Turboback exhaust
Hybrid BOV
P&L billet TGV deletes
air pump delete
Kartboy Outrigger/rear diff bushings
Kartboy Shifter w/solid linkage front/rear bushings
Transmission Crossmember bushings
SuperPro steering rack bushings

Groupe N Trans/Motor mounts
BC Racing BR Coilovers
Koyo Radiator

I'll give my thoughts on it in a bit, but I'd like to have a very similar chassis list of mods for the EVO. Just enough to tighten things up a bit not at the expense of making it annoying to drive. The subaru is only mildly harsher than OEM but significantly more tighter all around than a stock car.

the list continues to grow...

So far ive added
whiteline steering rack bushings,
front motor mount insert
mustache bar bushings
shifter base and cable bushings

to my cart. I would hate to pay for shipping multiple times, so id love to hear your guys thoughts on essential bushings that should be replaced, other than the typical control arm/ball joints which ill do as needed.

Well, things have taken a turn. Instead of fixing the rusty chassis on the 04, I picked up another car altogther. I was looking for a roller but stumbled upon a complete car. Gents, the new car...

05 GSR
60k reported miles, carfax verified.
Interior is completely gutted
supposed 2.3 shortblock
cammed/valvetrain
appears to be a garrett GTW3684R
AMS manifold/FMIC/Exhaust
upgraded clutch
Wilwood brakes
Old RC low impedence injectors/Walbro pump

PO said its running, but developed a fuel leak. Battery was too weak to try and check the leak but its at my garage now so first order of business is hearing it run. Got it for a decent deal. Fortunately the old car now will act as a donor for the interior of this car. Its gonna be some work but hoping I can get thsi thing on the road asap! Old driveline will be parted out as well.

I was gonna say just go FP green for a daily but this has took a turn now. But a 2.3 with a fp green or read would make a killer daily.

Well I definitely dove into the deep end. Told myself its "just" going to be an interior swap, well it is, but its so much work and time, x2. Stripping the donor car completely. While then also stripping the current harness and stuff from the new car. I'm not trying to turn this into a long term project, plan is to get this car to the shootout in August. Will post pictures and updates shortly.

I haven't been posting pictures but I have been busy making progress. Stripped down the whole front dash area of the grey car and then stripped the new car and transplanted everything over. I wasn't planning on doing this so soon but I couldn't get ecuflash to read from the ecu/harness on the new car and so that's what prompted the work. Yesterday i was able to sucessfully read from the ecu while installed in the new car, so the work was worth it. I got a few more things left, swapping door harness', hook up heater core hoses, vacuum/bleed the cooling system, install a new pusher fan, button up the dash completley then begin tuning. I'm really hoping I can have the car running/driving under its own power by end of the week. stay tuned!

Finally got the car started. So far just the blower motor is inop, everything else seems to be functioning. Ordered a coupler so i can properly mount the intake pipe, going to get some fresh fuel and then begin tuning!
