Does this waste gas?

Say im driving down a hill or just on the road and i leave the gear engaged (its at lets say 2500rpm) and let the trany slow the car down. If i dont put my foot on the gas at all, does it still burn as much gas as if i would keep my foot on the accelerator at that same rpm.

I dont think it would, cuz im not feeding the engine as much air so its basically the same as idle, correct?

but you could save even more by using the handbrake and shutting off the engine...

I usually don't worry about saving gas when I'm in a performance car...

I understand that this accurate; you would be burning only the idle amount of fuel when the throttle is at 0%.

I think that's accurate, anyway.

Is the reason my EGT's go lower as the engine slows down the car because the car is leaning out based on the load of the engine?

using the engine to slow down also saves your brake pads from wearing out as fast

If you let the car coast IN GEAR, with your foot off the accelerator, the ECU goes into fuel cut mode and no gas is being injected into the engine. You can actually feel the fuel come back on if you let it get down to around idle, depending on the elecrtical load.
