What is double clutching?

i was just wondering was double clutching was. i first heard about it when i was watching the fast and furious but i never really know what it was. What do u do? How does it help? Is it good or bad for the car? Has anyone had any experiences with double clutching?

double clutching is re-clutching in the same gear to get the RPM's up. when you pull in first and second, the car has power, lets say you mis-clutch third and this makes the RPM drop below pulling power, you reclutch, floor it then drop the clutcht to sprint the car forwards. if you are in a low HP car...under 150, double clutch works great on second gear, but won't do much in third or higher, if you are in lets say, an EVO Viii pulling 300+ hp, double clutching in third will make you peel out or chirp..assuming you drop the clutch rght.

Umm... I'm not sure what babyboba29 is saying, except I think that's a strategy for burning a clutch and slipping it intentionally for a little more torque.

Double clutching, which is probably explained in plastikpyro's link, but I'm too lazy to read, is simple pushing in the clutch to get out of gear, into neutral, engaging it again, depressing it again, then slipping into your next gear. It's largely unnecessary on cars now, but before synchro transmissions were common, it was necessary to change. Sometimes, if you are having trouble getting into a gear, especially first or reverse, and the shifter just won't push into gear, double clutching will make it fit smoothly.

It can essentially give you smoother shifts, but probably not as much as just practicing or rev-matching will do.

If they recommended it in the fast and the furious DO NOT try it in real life.

But in 2f2f he drives off a bridge like 50 feet into the air and lands perfect without breaking off his body kit or springs or anything. I want my car to be able to do that.

What your description sounded like, was starting somewhat normally, pulling out the clutch until the load on the engine slows it down and the tach comes under teh power band. At that point, I think your description says you push in teh clutch some more while still hitting the gas, getting your tach up into the power band again and letting out on the clutch again for essentially to bursts of power band in one shift. Yes, it can make you feel a lot torquier and I've done it when I've needed to get going fast - like outta someone's way about to hit me.

However, it is really bad for your clutch as it is essentially intentionally and forcefully slipping your clutch.

i think this is one exception..double clutching will let your gears in nicer and smoother, depending on if u do it correctly but like neilscully said, newer cars dont really need to because of the synchros.
