shift problem

some friend told me I should shift up from 3k rpm - 4k rmp.but I feel that shift from 2k rpm is more smooth. they told me it is bad for the engine.
what do you guys think?

Whatever feels best is the best most of the time, If you have to fight it then it's not good on the box.

shifting from about 2k is the smoothest and most fuel efficient. Shifting around 4k-6k is the fastest (for racing).

2k shifting? i thought 3k was low enough. if you shift at 2k youll be at like 1k in the next gear. am i missing something here. i usually shift at 3.5 when just cruising so my intake doesnt sound like a dying moose.

LOL I'm diggin the dying moose thing! But seriously I also shift at about 3.5rpms and that too is when im cruising it..yea shifting at like 2k feels smoother but man shifting out of 1st at 2k you will only be going as fast as a Rosco mobility wheel chairs.

Ask your *smart* friend to explain/elaborate/clarify how da heck shifting at 2K should be bad for the engine??? or..bad for the car???
Seriously, 'cuz I really really really want to know 'cuz that's what I always do for local driving; saves me a whole lot of gas.

btw, I find shifting at ~2600RPM to be the SMOOOOOOTHEST. (correct me if I'm wrong but I think as long as you are really good with the clutching, it'll be smooth no matter what RPM, eh? It's all about RPM matching isn't it?)

I sound like a n00b now...

when u shift at 2K, u wont drop to 1K. it drops to like 1600. It's not bag if ur not lugging ur engine. Just take it easy and slow. So what if ur going up hill at 2500 rpm slowing down? Ur saving gas. There's no need to waste it. Even in my Evo, sometimes, I look like a dead turtle. I shift at 2K but smoothness comes in closer at 3K. But I have the urge to shift at 7K. It takes about the same number seconds to read 7K anyway

Hmmmm......proper clutching engagement at certain speed for each gear change = smooth shifting...no matter RPM ya go...ofcourse higher RPM for that fast jerk...

reply: Shifting problem

Shifting at too low rpm can wear out the engine quicker.
Reason because that you need enough force to push all the exhaust out of the exhaust pipe so that it won't return to your engine.
Low rpm's may save more money on fuel but in long run will wear your heads and valves out quicker.
You're service book should tell you the perfect gears to shift at, otherwise shift at around 2700rpm - 3000 rpm for normal daily driving.

It's a ratio, so it drops a percentage, not a specific RPM. Shifting from 4k will drop it to 3k, but shifting from 2k only drops it to about 1600 as said above. And shifting from 6k drops it all the way down to about 4500. Many of the Lancer's competitors that have a factory shift light light up between 2k and 2500, which is apparently the best rpm for fuel economy. Deltron argues that the Lancer gets better mileage shifting around 3k-3500, and gets over 30 mpg in support of his claim. So take it as you will, but I recommend testing it out yourselves, as I seem to get the best mpg shifting at 2500 (which drops it to 2k) for all shifts except for 1st, which I shift at 3k just because I like the acceleration

If your engine is operating at an RPM far below optimal point, you will run into a slight problem called cam reversion... Though for your engine package, it's a problem you don't really need to worry about.

Brian needs to go back to 4th grade math and do percentage (or multiplication with fraction) again.

ASSUMING a 25% drop from 1st gear to 2nd...
2000 x .75 = 1500
4000 x .75 = 3000
6000 x .75 = 4500

So given that, I was pretty damn close for a guesstimate, wasn't I? In case you're wondering, I used to tutor people in math... and English too, so nobody be talkin bad grammar in 'ere ok?
