APS Intake - very good unit

We had a chance today to dyno test our second evo with the APS intake

This one had a hyperflow fmic, 264 / 264 cams, exhuast and a walbro pump with Pruven Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator

I really like the way this intake works - plus it is super well made and comes with a nifty water tank for the intercooler sprayer

It can't hurt that its a cold air intake although we don't see any gains from cold air intake on the dyno

Also - I am very proud of this tune - a great result and a blast to drive

Are you comparing the APS unit with the stock air box when you say "It can't hurt that its a cold air intake although we don't see any gains from cold air intake on the dyno"? I was thinking about getting the APS unit myself but now I might just leave the stock box in place. DOes the turbo sound different with the APS unit?

I making that statement I am comparing it to other aftermarket intakes wuch as the HKS suction kit which is not a cold air style intake

This APS unit is making very good power on the dyno and presumably it would make even more power once you are actuallty driving with the hood closed and the under hood temps start to heat up

Im my opinion the gains from a cold air intake would be nominal where you have a turbo charged and intercooled engine - however - there would be some power advantage from the cold air intake

hey dyno... i've been thinking of the APS Stage 1 kit... heard it was great on gains and was told you can upgrade to stage 3 without removing any stage 1's. Brainstorm in West LA/Venice area. they got a pretty nice EVO down there.

anyways, i've heard cold-air intakes altogether are no good for EVOs because of irregular readings? what are your thought on this?

Putting this intake on your car without a professional tuning job at the same time is suicide for your engine for sure. This unit seriously distorts the mass air flow signal and really leans out the mid range to a dangerous level. The good news is that after retune - either by flashing in my case or by piggy back - it does read very consiatantly and evenly (just leaner than stock).

Therefore - if you get this APS stuff get the car tuned at the same time

The APS is great equipment for sure

Hmmm, I see... For reassurance purposes, what would you recommend I start out with? APS Stage 1 or APS Stage 1 w/o the cold air intake? Is it safe to say with the cold air intake and proper tuning, the EVO will have more potential?

Wow Al, My Evo Was The First Evo You Saw With The Intake About 6 Months Ago,
Its Nice To Here That You Have A Good Tune With The Aps. I Remember It Was Driving You Crazy Because Of Such Cold Air, But As We All Know, The Colder The Air Intake On A Turbo Car The More Power!! Mmmmm Why Would Any One Want To
Suck In 200+ Degrees Air Into The Motor...mike

Yes this head had the addition of the cams and a hyper flow intake which really seemed to wake things up quite a bit. A very good intake - BUT one that certainly puts stresses on the fuel supply side due to all the air flow

About how many WHP do you think this intake adds with your tune?

Is just a Walbro enough to fuel straight 272's with this intake and your flash?

This is one of the better inatkes but presents tuning difficulties duie to its unique distortion of the MAF signal

How would you compare it to the BR unit? Currently, I have a 3" tbe with magnaflow and high flow cat, and I was planning on getting the BR filter kit with pipe, uic pipe, small battery, (basically all of stage 2).

My personal preference is always the BR set ups as they work very well, they are designed to work together and are a big bang for the buck. Additionally on the BR stuff I have hours of dyno tuning with David Buschur to get his tunes just the way he likes so I am very good at tuning BR parts
