Case study # 22 - How air intakes make your car run lean and how tuning helps

Here is proud Evo-Ny memner and evom member KITKITWAI

Nothing new here - this is just a refresher as I still see dozens of peoplerunning HKS suction intake, ARC and Buschur all of which distort the maf sesnor reading. All aftermarket intakes need a retune of the stock ecu by a piggy back or reflash.

Here is a customer with basic 3 " exhuast, EBC (20 psi) and

ARC intake does with stock ecu

Note the ultra lean a/f ratio due to the new intake's distortion of the MAF sesnsor

The lean a/f results in knock activity and the ecu selectively pulling ignition timing in various areas - this brings us the weak dyno numbers and rough power band

Note as we go richer on the tuning back to normal levels - we see a smoother and smoother power band created

11.1 / 1 is where we will see max power and a smooth curve

so if we were tuned for a plain cone filter and switch to hard piping like injen or hks would we still need a retune since we were already tuned for a filter?

yes you would still need to tune. the problem is the cone-style filter that distorts the MAF reading and causes some lean conditions.

Another Tibit, you must get a reflash if you replace the intake you had a custom flash done on.

We have found the K & N Typhoon is not a good intake - in most cases we have seen it acutally makes less whp than the stock air box

With that intake a custom tune is best as they are very inconsistant

looks like this is what I was looking for.

that a/f ratio looks almost exactly like mine with the whp/torque lines being almost like mine...

looks like dynoflash for me! If Al ever comes back from where ever he is... I think he's just ignoring me...
