Case study # 91 - lean mail in tunes vs. Dyno Flash

A non evo member Lino came in today compalining of poor driveability with a competative mail in tune product

Here is his before and after dyno sheet

Diagnosis - tune was way too lean

Lean does not always make more power when the stock ecu starts to pull timing due to knock activity. His timing was down to negative values - hence no tq.

Going richer can help you run smoother and with more timing

Mods

3" exhasut
HKS intake
272 cams
720 injectors
walbro pump
HKS evc V

Is this a true mail-in vs. mail-in comparison? Or is your flash a custom one?

I think that if he was trying to sell more of his mail-in flashes, this would have been the perfect opportunity to prove his mail-in is superior.

Would anyone be surprised to find out a custom tune made more HP than a mail-in tune?

Al didn't specify the tune, nor do we know if the posted graph represents this customer's final numbers.

Actually, my mail in flash made more power - about 3 - 4 whp more but was too close to the edge IMHO so the custom tuning part involved just making it a tad safer - I added more fuel and took out a degree of timing

To get a good maregin of saftey a 3 - 4 whp loss is acceptable

This was a custom tune that made less whp than my mail in version

If he had a better tank of gas the mail in version may have been fine in his case
