Dyno Tune vs Road Tune - Case Study # 146 - Member 1.8t
Lately there has been a lot of debate and discussion concerning the issue of how best to properly tune a car and what methods will achive the best "results"
As I was comming to Atlanta where Top Speed is located which has one of the best dynos available - a brand new Dyno Jet I decided to offer the customers an option of either dyno tuning or road tuning
As fate would have it the customers slpit 50 / 50 with half getting a dyno tune today and the other half getting a road tune tomorrow
One of the guys from tomorrow's road tune - member 1.8T showed up today and I decdied to tune him today on the road to get him done before some rain rolls in
His car was right down the middle of the road
RMR Intake
GSC 264 / 264 cams
Buschur 3 " Exhuast
Hallman MBC
Walbro pump
10.5 Hotside
custom road tune
With 93 octane pump gas and a nice conservative tune - this is what his car was doing with a few corrections on base map for his set up
NOTE * the Territory here is not 100% flat and I was going slightly down hill on this so the G's are a bit high
The car felt crisp, smooth and the data log showed a nearly perfect tune. However, the car MAY have had a slight boost leak based upon how the boost was falling down - a small one.
Now it was time to strap it on the dyno and see what it would do.
I DID NOT TOUCH THE FLASH - just adjusted the boost a bit to match the load on the dyno and we see that the dyno sheet is represnting exactly what I am seeing on my data logs
I have said it 1,000 times - A GOOD TUNER can get the same tune on a dyno or on the road
Road going cars are driven on roads not dynos so I prefer road tuning but either way will get you a good result if you know what you are doing and take your time
BTW - today I tuned a IX on the same dyno with a TB exhuast and MBC which made 360 TQ with pump gas

The car feels strong and smooth. Thanks again for the tune Al. I have always liked road tunes. My previous project car that was built was road tuned and it is still running today, 3yrs later, on a motor that was never meant to see boost at all, much less 14psi(and it runs strong too, 115mph traps)
Hey Doug,
DO you think you can email me or PM me all of my dyno charts from earlier today? I would like to keep a copy of all of the runs that Al did.
I believe you named the folder "nathan".
Thanks again for hosting this event.
Also, I did have one question on the graph that you just posted. Are those uncorrected numbers or SAE corrected?
Thanks,
Nathan

Al or Doug, do you have the SAE corrected dyno graphs? I am curious to see how they turned out.

1.8t your boost appears to fall, but nice power though. You need to tighten the WG act a few turns or get a forge WG act
Thats whay the difference
These IX #'s are just getting out of hand.
