Suddenly Boosting Much Higher - Any Ideas?

I just recently had a custom road tune in LA and love the way the car now runs. However, today on the long commute back from a client, I noticed that in 5th gear, I was seeing peak boost of about 23.5lbs tapering to about 21lbs. In 4th gear, I was seeing peak boost of about 22lbs tapering to about 20lbs.

Although I haven't driven the car many miles since the tune, I don't remember it ever boosting this high. Any ideas why? Is it safe?

I didn't have much time to test it further today...will do tomorrow. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The reason why I ask is that I have yet to see a IX on ecu controlled boost hold that much boost to red line

Many boost gauges are inaccurate

If the car is suddenly making too much boost I can adjust that for you if its needed - but thus far I have not seen that condition arise

FWIW, it's normal to see higher boost in higher gears, because there is more load. Did you just never hit full boost in 5th gear while paying attention to the boost gauge before?

Al & Warrtalon,

Boost Gauge is an Autometer Ultralite. Before the tune, max boost in 5th gear was about 19.5psi tapering to about 17psi.

I have to admit, since the custom tune in LA, I haven't put many miles on the car and probably hadn't paid much attention to max boost in 5th gear. I went and tested some more today and found that in 3rd or 4th gear, max boost was about 21.5psi tapering to about 20psi. Max boost in 5th gear seems to spike to about 23.5psi and taper to about 21psi.

Thoughts? Is this safe? Love the way the car runs, just don't want to grenade a motor. Thanks.

I also was custom tuned on my 9 and I live in Utah, about 4200 feet. I went to Sacramento and was seeing 24 pounds of boost in 5th. And it wasn't tapering. In 4th, it was hitting 23 tapering to 21I have an autometer sport compact boost gauge. In Utah it hits about 21 tapering to 20 in 5th.

The auto meter gauges are typically reading a bit on the high side

My MAP sensor usually shows the IX;s tapering down closer to 17 psi actual boost towards red line in most cases

If you feel that the current boost level you are at is too high for your tatses I can easily turn it down a bit for you at no charge just send it in anytime via fed ex and I will cover your return shipping

I usually get them back out the same day

Your call on what to do - perhaps you may wish to consider testing the boost level with another known reliable boost gauge ?

Or better yet, A MAP sensor. It seems like just about every boost gauge is wrong and that maps sensors are the only way to know your correct boost curve.

I think there are boost gauges out there that give accurate readings as a map sensor, Stewart Warner being one of them. I was surprised when Al custom tuned me that my boost gauge was giving readings similarly to Al's map sensor.

Stewart Warner is very good

Best way to test a boost gauge is by hooking it up to a good quality tire pressure gauge and a air compressor

Yeah, I have heard Stewart Warner is a good gauge. Not like my dumb Defi D, which reads bout a lb and a half off. But I have a MAP sensor and ZT2, so I can log correct boost.

I might get a SW boost gauge soon. Do you have a pic of yours installed?? How bout at night withe the lights turned on??

The ZT2 has a screen display. Did you not get that option?

I currently don't have a pic of it installed. The only drawback of this gauge is that its somewhat hard to view at night as the needle isn't well illuminated, but it looks damn sexy with the red led as it matches the dashboard perfectly. It sits on the right side of my steering column.
