Big boost, tuning and trying to drive, roller coaster on wheels

Just got back from my final preparations for tomorrow's Summer Slam at Raceway Park

I usually have to take my car out late at night these days so I can get enough room on the highway to compelete a 3rd gear pull - (4th gear is out of the question - too reckless indeed)

I have reached the point now with 34 psi of boost on tap that the gaues all respond so quickly and violently and the car is sliding around so much that it is literally impossible to watch for anything at all - its all just basically a giant violent blur

The pulls in 3rd gear have also gotten so short hat they are almost over before they start - to gie you an idea how fast we are talking about the data logs in 3rd gear go from spool up reaching 25 psi of boost until shifting point in 4th in 1.4 - 1.45 seconds - thats a fast pull ! To give an example of why we prefer street tuning to dyno tuning - to compar the same exact pull on the dyno takes 2.2 seconds on the average frm the point of reaching 25 psi to the shift in 3rd

As soon as the turbo spools up my head starts jerking backwards and the tires and the clutch both start to spin and the car starts sliding sideways

If you have ever driven a 1,000 or over size super bike you have an idea of the sensation of the accelaration and the sudden way the power hits and the way it lingers all the way up to insane revs

I have certainly reached th point where I can no longer tune and drive at the same time - there si no way to keep an eye on a particular gauge and also keep the car on the road. I am very greatful for the data logging capabilities of the AEM and the new AEM wideband gauge - which gauage I highly recoemend as a huge value fo the $ - as without data logging there would be no way to tune my car at this point

Although I still call my evo a 'street car' and I continue to regularly use it for basic transportation - its becoming very apparent that the power level has become ALMOST too much for a well balanced car

At this level of boost the car is something you take out on a Sunday morning to blast the highway briefly when no one else is awake - - its certainly not rational or scoially responsible to drive a vehicle like this on the road

IF the clutch can hold this power when its completely warmed up (I hope) and if nothing breaks then tomrrow I should be setting some new personal bests at the track

Most importantly have fun Al, give us a report after the race and see if you can't have someone get some videos of you and other evos.

Its always . . . . something !!!!!!

I hit the track eager to break into the 10's and on my first pass I was flying trough 1- 3rd gear when I basically ran out of fuel and went through 4th gear sputtering for a 11.5 @ 126 mph

I realized that something was wrong and set out upon the local side roads at th track to assess tha damage

It seems that the 3rd gear 1.4 second long pulls I was doing were not long enough to deplete the fuel supply in the rail and lower the fuel pressure

As soon as I started down the track for a full 1 - 4th gear pass the little walbro basically could not pump fast enough to fill the fuel rail

What I had to do to finish the race was DETUNE the car - lowering the boost far enough so that the pump could supply enough fuel for not only a 3rd gear pull - - but also a full 1 - 4th gear drag pass up to 125 mph

Unbelievably - I had to turn the car down to an even 20 psi in order to keep the fuel pressure consistant

The amazing part was even at only 20 psi of boost - in the 1st round of eliminations I was able run a 1.58 60' on the way to a 11.2 @ 122mph !!!!!!

It simply amazes me that my car is every bit as fast now at a low 20 psi of boost with the 3040 turbo as it used to be with the 3037 at 29 psi! It really has me excited to see what is going to happen at 34 psi of boost !!

I was very happy that my late night tuning efforts making a new tuning map for 20 psi of bost were able to get me in to the semi finals - my had work paid off with a nice throphy and a small purse!

Best part - as usual - is driving home in my car the 100 mile trip from the track with my a/c on and everything working 100%!

As soon as I figure out the best way to upgrade the fuel pump this nasty big turbo will be sarting to roar !

Major props to Dyno Flash customer Mike's Dad (actually Mike himself and his dad) who were at th track both days and hung around deep nto the night both times in the braket races -going many many rounds - I had to leave a bit early tonight so I did not see how they fared

Also bif props to the Ultmate Racing sponsored Evo 8 of Terry a/k/a Ingognito (who runs Stage Rev Dyno Flash) who was running all day in the braket 3 class sticking right on his dial in of 12.00

Just do a setup like GT40. His has a sugetank and everything.

But, you didn't blow your motor when you ran out of fuel?

I beleive the surge tank is illegal in my NHRA class so I will have to either figure something else out or move up into the very fast Modified class where I will hav zero chance to win

NO - BTW - I did not blow up my motor - even at 34 psi ! running ot of boost as the starvation of fuel was serious enough that the power cut off suddenly when the fuel pressure dropped

If you loose one injector - or just run too lean and get detonation, thats when things blow up

This condition was more like a fuel cut rev limter for example !

The tough think is hat the HKS pump would prob be very difficult to install in the Evo due to the plastic cage type furl pump holder employed in the Evo 8

The job seems difficult for several reasons - the problem holding in the new pump - the connection on the discharge on the stock set up requries the pump to be pressed up agsinst a rubber bushing and also on the stock set up there is a function that the bottom holder serves that will have to be re-worked

I am thinking of the two Walbro pump option - however it seems that would be also very dificult and may render the fuel level gauge inoperable

Finally - it seems the twin hump arrangement on the stock tank makes it not very easy to do the traditional 1st gen sumped tank set up

Overall its a problem which is really bugging me

On the WRX it was real easy to just slap that HKS pump in there and install a -8 line

What kind of fuel systems does Turbotrix run or others that are into the 10s/9s?

From what I ae been told - Turbotrix and Dan at Pruven both run an extra Walbro pump in the passaner side where the fuel leel sender is - I am not sure about Turtrix's car but on Dan's car this rendered the fuel level gauge inoperable

I am spending countless minutes searching the internet for a perfect soultion on this fuel supply isses

IF I were not drag racing in the Street Tire class I would just do the surge tank

Al, if you wanted a solution and something to sell and make money, get a cnc pump holder to replace the oem plastic holder. Check out wotm.com and look at their supra fuel pump solutions.

I am getting a hard one just thinking about the idea of having one of these for my Evo
