Need some insight on flex fuel sensor and tuning

Hey all,
I recently installed an AEM infinity6/8h ECU and added a flex fuel sensor into it. The car was somewhat tuned (street tuned) after adding these parts and a few others that had been changed to at least be driveable. We know the flex fuel sensor is working but my tuner suggested that the car needs to be tuned on e98 and pump gas so that the sensor can differentiate any fuel between the 2. Is this true? If not? Should the computer be able to compensate for pump gas as it is? Currently, the only "E85" available in my area is consistent at between 65-70% ethanol. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated as searching google only comes up with "buy this flex fuel sensor kit" or how to install a flec fuel sensor kit. Thanks in advance!

Funny, I just converted to flexfuel myself. It is my understanding that you would get tuned on first your pump gas map ( 91 or 93 depending on where you live) and your ethanol map, order doesn't matter. Where I am we get between E80 - E82, so 82% ethanol max. The rom will then be able to adjust timing, fuel, and boost, for all values in between your min and max E% values. In this case, full pump gas to full ethanol and any mixture in between. Sometimes the tuner may ask you to fill up a mixture of fuel and ethanol in between to get some logs on the middle mixture, but you are pretty spot on with your thinking. The ECU will make the proper adjustments once it knows the settings for basic pump gas and ethanol. You don't need to go out and find E98, unless you really want the entire spectrum tuned in just in case. Most places won't have E98 anyway. If I was doing that, then I would say get tuned on 87 octane all the way up to E98 This way I could fill up on **** or liquid gold.

The whole flex fuel portion on the Infinity is super easy to use. I would suggest to first tune it on whatever % ethanol you can get and work backwards to pump gas. It would be best to start with E98 though. As long as you have the VE table pretty close and the flex blend table accurate, it should be able to run on whatever % ethanol you throw in it. I would also suggest to start by throwing your stock timing map into the flex ign map. If you are going to use the boost target tables in PSI, things get confusing as AEM wants you to use them in KPA which I hate. Here is what mine looks like.

You can see that I had to set up table #1 to -15 to compensate the switch from KPA to PSI. Dont know why but thats what they said I had to do and it works. Then in target table #2, everything is normal.

There are a whole lot of things in the Wizard that you will need to set up first so take a look through that first.

If you have any specific questions, just let me know. I should be able to answer most of them.

Thanks for the reply. I figured he was right, i was just inquiring because i am currently out of fuel (nearest place to get e85 is 65 miles away) and was going to take the car on a short drive not far from my house to give it a good detail before listing for sale. But since I dont have any available e85 and probably shouldnt put pump gas in it, i suppose the car is going to sit a while. And youre correct, most places dont have e98, was going to buy some off a distributor. I shouldve clarified that the fuel used in the car since I've owned it has been e85. Guess ill have to wait to drive it or whatever until i can get some fuels!!
