Any tips on tuning Mivec?

I have 2-3 maps now and it seems that most people change the 14.4 in the middle of the map in Load 120% to 19.2 and it looks like the JDM map goes to 28.8 in that range. Is this what most people are doing bumping up the 14.4 area of the map to 19.2+?

there is a thread where someone posted a pic of the JDM RS MIVEC map and some others made modifications to it and it seemed to work pretty well.

Copying the JDM RS map should make you happy. For road tuning I doubt it could be bettered.

the only worry i have with the JDM map is that it is based on Japanese octane rating of ~93-94 US equivalent. Us CA folks might be SoL with it. Since I don't drive my car much on a daily basis, maybe someone can check and read some of the knock counts with the RS maps.

The MIVEC changes shouldn't really substantially change the knock threshold compared with ignition timing.

On my UK IX FQ340 (which is basically a JDM GSR) with airbox lid off, Walbro, 3" catless O2 housing back exhaust on UK 98 RON - like your 92-93 PON I gather - I run similar to the JDM RS MIVEC map, with typically 3 degrees more ignition timing, 5% leaner and more boost. Octane number is pegged at 255, and the highest knock count I see is usually a 1 or 2 with a sporadic 3. I also get no signs of det on my Knocklink which I've calibrated with det cans.

IX's dont seem to knock at peak torque like an VIII will. Least from the 3 that I have logged, though if you got REALLY aggressive with timing or fuel it would to be sure. MIVEC might up the cylinder pressure, but its with cold air so if anything its cooling the cylinder (improved scavenging). However with lots of cam advance on the topend it seems that it will knock under high load. I havent taken the time to log another 5th gear pull with the MIVEC at a stock level, but I did see some minor knock at 6900-7050 with aggressive MIVEC. My observation anyway.

Anyone have any mivec maps they can post up? I have seen the JDM one and the stock one, it seems the JDM changed the 24's to 28

I applied the JDM RS MIVEC map to my EVO last night along with mildly advanced timing (1 or 2 degrees in upper RPMs) and mildly leaned fuel in upper RPMs.. the result was very nice. The car definitely spools faster and pulls harder in the low gears. Based on my EVOScan logs there is more load in the lower RPMs and about the same load as before in the upper band. No knock to speak of other than a couple of 1-3 counts at around 4000rpm. This is about as much tuning as I'm willing to do without a wideband, but it's a nice little increase on an otherwise stock car.

JC and I found that with the JDM RS high advance numbers you can make GIGANTIC spool really low in the rev range.

Spectre, your 1-3 counts were at what timing range/fuel/MIVEC/boost ?

3 of the last 4 stock ix's ive logged have had 1-2 knock counts on stock ecu's (93 octane) from 4000-5000 rpm, intermittently.... even at low timing and proper fueling...

mostly during tip in, wondering if its a closed/open loop transition issue??

thoughts?

I am in michigan and i can get 93 and 94 all the time i have a ix with a cat back on it.

Is it safe to just upload the RS JDM map and then start to tune from there.

i can find the GT/GSR map but not the RS can someone link me to it if i can start with this map or pm me.

sorry for all the noob questions

(side note i wonder if we add some advance or retard down low if we would get a lumpy idle)

Cant retard it more than 0* on the map. Yes it is safe to start with the RS map for MIVEC and see what works for you. GT/GSR map can be found on openecu.org. It really isnt all that interesting, but that is purely my opinion and not dyno backed up.
