So I pulled a MAP of a 04 ECU, and.....
2004 SSL was flashed twice (by guess who) then custom tuned by same tuner in October 2005.
ECUFLASH comes out with 1.27, my ECU is loaded as 96420008, and my idle stepper tables were the same as Tom's in the other post- all dicked up
ECUFLASH comes out with 1.29, my rom is read as 96420007 and the tables are fine now.
My ECU has neither of those ROM ID's labled and have always had some very odd things go on with the ecu too.

This guy had the exact same problem as me except opposite ROM ID's (perhaps they got switched in Als computer several years ago - lol) His is 20008 and mine 20007

Tom, are the tables messed up on all of the parameters?

It appears as though the values inside of the tables are correct, as nothing gave me the "oh jeezus" when I looked at it. It's only the Load's and RPM's that are not right.
Funny thing is, it seems to be a real common thing with Al's flashes, and even more common for the 04's. In the first link you posted, and after reading a few int he other links, it seems like he is trying to play it off like he doesn't know what he is doing.
The even more interesting this is, the original tuner for this specific car was NOT Al.
I am going to be verifying that 100% though, mostly for my own knowledge, not public.

So, I tried loading in the maps specified by Malibu, and it works..
I copied the original map, and am going to screw around with it tonight to see if I can get it to work. I guess I will have to try each ROM ID, save it, close, then re-open to see if it all reads right?

Yep, unfortunately if the problem is that your ECU ID is messed, and you have no idea what it was, then your only option is to try entering different ones until you find the right one.
And again, yes, you change the ID, close and reopen the rom.
Just make sure you do this on a copy, not the original.
A trick to make life easier is to use a hex editor to scan the region of the rom where the ECUID is located, as those bytes are repeated several times, you might get lucky and find the right value (if not just the first two bytes) another place that the ECUID sometimes turns up (again sometimes only the first 2 bytes) is the last few bytes at the end of the rom.

OK, so I got it to work, and found out the original ROM number that the car should have had in the first place.
But, now we are running into a bunch of other issues now that need to be fixed prior to tuning the car. Hopefully we can get it all resolved, as I am eager to get this car running correctly. With a 2.3 in it, I really want to see what I can extract from it, as eventually I am going to go to a bored/stroked motor, and this will help me in deciding what to go with. I did already notice immediately that the spool was faster than mine..

This saga has been ongoing for about a year from everything start to finish. I'm glad someone is actually helping Dave get his car running right again. On the way back from Greer Sunday, his car ran noticeably better than it had, so it's a testament to Tom's ability to get something's to finally start working right.

I really hope that Dave posts the findings that we had on the car. One of the big name companies out there, specifically the intercooler and piping kit, is literally falling apart. I hope he posts pictures of what we all found just because it will give the end users more opportunity to be aware of what kind of quality some companies are producing to. (Specifically, Greddy products) I know that after seeing the problems for myself, I will never ever put a Greddy product on my car now.
But, I am excited, like nj said in his "How To Tune an Evo" thread, it's a little passion that I have, to really understand the inner workings of the tuning side of things. I am mostly excited for the day that Dave can drive a car without issues again. The best part is to see a happy Evo owner in the end.
But, we still have a lot of issues to work through, but we will get there sooner or later.
Tom, my appreciation and gratitude go farther beyond words. I may not say enough, but i'll do anything to help you out. Yes the car does run better and it i can feel it wanting to pull more. I have plenty of patience to get things done right. As far as the greddy, the intercooler and piping are fine, its just the couplers were the issue. I'll have that resolved soon enough.
