How much memory is needed to tune effectively?

please excuse the newb question, but as I am trying to become a DIYer, The first question that came to mind, is do I have enough Comp. for this? Does anyone have any idea how big these programs are? And which ones are necessary (I have an older HP presario. ) I just started to read, so please bare w/ me.
I see the first thing I will need is ECUFLASH and a tactrix cable. Will I need any other programs, besides ECU FLASH? I am gonna start logging, before i change any tables. Its gonna be a learn as i Go scenario, so if someone could chime in and tell what programs to read up on first, would be my hero lol.
and before you get amped to flame me, ...there are multiple programs to choose!
Thanks in advance
I admit it, I'm a rook, but I am trying

Probably the bare minimum to run windows will allow it to run and tune effectively.

I would be speechless if even the slowest computer couldn't keep up with a COM port. The only other program you will need besides EcuFlash is a logger so Evoscan or equivalent.

Keep in mind that the slower the laptop you are logging on, the less items you can log before you start to "miss" data from the ECU. Look in the sticky part of this forum for some "newbie" threads you should start reading.

Good luck

ur not just a noob on evom, ur also a big time noob tech wise. why dont u simply TELL us the spec of ur laptop and someone will give u an opinion on it. again it will most likely be an opinion.

honestly speaking if u dont have the know-how to go atleast half way yourself and start asking such 101 question right off the bat, maybe u shouldnt be tuning at all.

Your laptop should be running windows XP/SP2 at a minimum to run ecuflash and all the free tuning tools available here on the forums

If you have any performance issues or the laptop can't handle winXP SP2, then you need to upgrade the laptop to tune effectively.

Until Jan I was using a Pentium II 300 MHz with 96 MB RAM and Windows 2000. I was fine with earlier versions of Evoscan and Ecuflash. I changed partly because I couldn't seem to flash my friend's STI due to driver problems.

I reckon a Pentium III 800 with 256 MB and XP would be a sensible minimum, but dual core laptops cost hardly anything now, especially in North America.

Unfortuneately I dont know any of the specs, its a hand me down from my GF who gave it to her bro, shes getting a new one, and so forth, one comes my way. All she remembers is that its an HP Presario, running windows xp. ( if I knew, I would have) Yes I know im no computer genius, thanks for the comment! As I said in the first line, I am making an attempt at learning... I found it a shame that I paid 5 bills for a tune and the tuner didnt care to share any info on what he was doing. So now, I must take it upon myself to learn, how ever long it takes!

You can find out the specs for yourself:

Start->run->control

Click on System and then basic process and ram info should be there.

Or start->run->cmd

systeminfo

oh man you need alot of help if you dont even know how to find the specs of a computer. in XP run "msconfig" and will give you most of the info. if you need video info and misc data, run "dxdiag". you can also find your memory by going to command prompt and typing "mem".

i know its YOUR car and YOUR computer, but i highly recommend you get a friend whos more technical then you to educate you. sory if you took this personally, not meant to be.

I do appreciate all the info. As you can read, its gonna be a learning experience for me, to say the least! I know nothing about tuning cars or computers. Time to change that! Im hoping i get the comp. soon so I can start my education!
