It starts at 100% and drops when you encounter sustained knock over 6 counts. When it drops from 100%, the ECU begins to interpolate with the low octane maps.

hmm, so whats the point of it? knock can be caused through many things so i cant see a point of it simply lowering in relevance to the knock count?

or is that exactly what it is? another way of seeing knock?

ie if you didnt log knock, and you logged octane level and it showed 85% you can safely presume your getting some form of knock of the ecu is swapping to the 2nd timing or lower octane maps?

if so, should it be aimed to be 100% all the time?

Yes, it should be 100% at all times.

It's basically a trim value that the ECU uses to determine how well the car is running. Before it applies timing or fuel, the octane value is considered to determine how much of which map to use.

Yeah, if you are logging it and it is showing 85%, then something is wrong if it is not going back up to 100%.

Either you are knocking really bad, or something is possibly wrong with your formula.

You have some issues to address if you're seeing 85%. Also, it goes back to 100% every time you flash, just like your fuel trims.

Yeah, amen to that one. For your octane level to be dropping into the 85% region, correct me if I am wrong, but you must be seeing some really hefty knock counts/numbers. I have seen on my personal car knock logs going up to very low 30's (Oops, he he) and my octane flag only dropped into the 95-96% region.

I've only seen 96% ... this was on a base Lancer that rode with 6-12 counts most of the time ...

You should see no less than 98% on a decent running Evo IMO.

Yeah, I am glad I have mine running well now. That 95-96% was because of a typo I made while manually entering numbers into my ignition tables.

Now I very rarely ever see below 99.6%.....
