Trying to log evoscan with zeitronic external wideband

I need same help looging AFR with Evoscan.

I just got my zt-2 installed and it looks like I got it done correctly as the zr-1 gage is reading around 14.7 at idle and cruising. I just hooked up the switched power (red) and ground (black) to get it running.

Now my question is: Can I log the AFR reading with Evoscan using this setup?
Do I need to wire up the zt-2 output to the ECU to get evoscan display and log AFR?

The zt-2 came with a cable (phone jack type conn) to hook to the laptop.
If I hook this to my laptop, will Evoscan detect the AFR output from this cable in the laptop and add it to the logged and displayed variables in Evoscan?

Thanks,
gunhaha

run the phone jack to a serial port on the laptop with the serial adapter that came with it and set evoscan to ZT2 wideband and the correct serial port #

My laptop does not have a serial port to connect the serial adaptor that came with the zt-2. Do I have to get a USB x serial adaptor and connect to a USB port instead? Why doesn't it work with just connecting directly to the phone jack port in the laptap?

Thanks,
gunhaha

'cause the phone jack is a phone jack that works on DTMF... while the modular jack out of the zeitronix is a serial rs232 connection. its the same jack - totally different protocol. you need a modular to serial adapter (comes with the zeitronix, or you can buy one) and a serial to USB convertor. when you install the drivers for the serial to USB, it will give you a comport.

Thanks Dex.

I'm off to Radio shack to get as serial to usb adaptor.

I can't understand why zeitronix did not include this serial to USB adaptor. All new laptops don't have serial ports. With the price they are asking one would think everything is included to get it running.

Thanks,
gunhaha

true, it wouldnt cost them that much more to design an FTDI USB into the wideband unit... its just laziness imo. good luck!

I would recommend the Keyspan Serial to USB adapter.

I have tried a bunch and that is the only one I have got to work correctly, every time.

Where did you bought it from?

I just came back from Radio Shack and they don't have this serial x usb adapter anymore. I will try Microcenter if the got one.

Thanks,

And the zt-2/zr-1 package I got did not come with a bung for the exhaust too. So I have to pay $15 for a bung at O'Reilly.

It's the engineering choice. RS232 serial signals are + - 12V (24V total). In reality about 20V. USB signals are 3.3V. Did you ever wonder why USB cables are only 6 ft length? USB is an office spec protocol, serial RS232 is meant for reliable industrial / automotive use. You can run long serial cables safely in electrically noisy automotive environment. Most new laptops are meant to be used for home or office. There are still new laptops with serial ports obviously not as common since most laptops are used at office, home or school A good short cable USB serial adapter does the trick really well. Recent rat shack USB serial adapters with 6 ft long wires on the USB side are fuzzy.
Hope this clarifies for you USB vs serial choice.

What do you mean "fuzzy". How is this detrimental to logging? Obviously, I have a "rat shack" serial/usb adapter.

there are cables out there from serial to usb, all around 20-50$$$
here is from digikey.com part # U209-000-R-ND
radioshack.com Model: 26-183 | Catalog #: 26-183

or you can use something like an ATMEL232 chip and build one yourself.

I'm referring to a recently sold by rat shack usb serials with 6 ft length cables on the USB side. Opposite to what engineering logic dictates. We have seen problems using those. They are so borderline they lose signal. There is a lot of good USB serial adapters on the market. Most with a short USB cable.
