Which cam, kelford 177A or 177C?

Hey Guys,

The 177-A's are :

264/270 intake/exhaust
11/10.35 intake/exhaust

the 177-C's are :

272/272
11/11

Now I don't want to compromise on my street drivability at all.

It's a stock IX motor (3" TBE) and I am planning a BBK Lite/Full upgrade in the near future.

Any other suggestions are welcome - GSC S1's??

Dave,

I think either will remain streetable, but the main thing is do you want to do valvesprings at the same time? If you dont mind then the C cams, otherwise the A's are your cam. The S1 is going to be similar (still not the same though) as the A cams for overall measurements and the fact it doesnt require springs.

crap I just realised I put this in the wrong Forum.

Sorry Guys - my bad.

I probably wont do springs/retainers - too much cost

Kelford are saying for a stock turbo go with the 177-A's.

Whats the deal with the S1's - is there a new version? better or worse?
Can I just get Kelford to grind the same numbers as the GSC S1?

Kelford will do custom grinds if you'd prefer they manufacture them instead of purchasing from GSC. You should research where the GSC cams come from though, Kelford manufactures many of the aftermarket cams including the Cosworths. If I had to do cams again I'd probably go for the GSC S1's which aren't much less aggressive than my FP4R's but will be safer on the stock springs and have better drivability.

Brian Crower 280s with their springs kit, especially on a MIVEC motor. Your the genius behind the majority of the ECU disassembly so you should have no problem tuning the ECU for those cams. On all the cams I've installed and tuned I've found the most power with this setup and still am able to tune for stock like idle and driveability. Lift is 10.80/10.36

I haven't had any experience with the Kelfords though, however, since reading their online literature I may start to push customers to using their cams. The lift on the 272s is the largest out there.

Check out the Forced Performance FP4R's (which is what I run).

nah gone off FP

kelford/camtech are close to me so I will probably go with them.

But from what I have read the 272's will reduce torque/power low down (even thou they give much better high rpm gains )

There are still huge gains in tq with the 9177c. We just tuned one on HFS-1 with "kelford" 9177c to 471 tq on stock turbo!

Let us know if you want us to send you a set Tephra, we are the US largest stocking Kelford dealer for Evo.

The 177-C you listed are listed at the spec as the Cossie M2s I have on my IX. The Evo is my primary vehicle so to say it's a daily driver would be an understatement.

I believe You answered a lot of your own question If you want to maintain the most powerband down low then the lower lift cam it is. Some say it's a waste but anytime you change cam profile its' going to be a give and take situation. the 264 cams are going to allow you to feel better about using stock springs and retainers although if it were me I would wait to do new springs and retainers. If you or someone is going to take time to do cams why not new springs? I understand the cost associated and there are a lot of people running stock springs on aftermarket cams. LOL

I have done it different I ordered the Red and I plan on running it with stock cams at least long enough to see what it does on my car. for me it was the biggest jump in power to $$$ ratio and made sense since I do not want to go inside the engine just yet . Cams 15-30+? HP and $1000 plus after labor vs. around $2k for red with install if I do not do it myself.

I'm not trying to talk you out of cams or anything and I wish you the best on your choice.

PS Nice that you are keeping it "down unda"

To be safe on stock springs there is no choice other than the 264's I would trust what cam manufacturer says.

Oh yeah personally I have never changed cams without springs and retainers let alone guides but thats just me and dont plan on changing regardless what anyone says. Better safe and little more broke than sorry IMO

LOL Christamas Mamosas' and Champagne do have a wonderful affect

Happy Holidays and thanks Dave for all your hard work

Cheers M8

Go for HKS 272 and keep OEM springs. They, IMHO, are better than the S1 and certainly hold and make more torque. I rev them to 8300 rpm on stock springs with built bottom end. I have gained throughout the rev range. FPgreen turbo used.

Springs and retainers are not necessary for 9177c Kelfords. They are recommended, but we have installed over 100 sets, most of which did not use upgraded springs and have never had any problems below 8000rpms.
