9653 vs 9417?
I'm a newb, but in my search to solve the CEL when running the USDM rom on a 1G DSM with the EVO 8 ecu...I found that there's two different cam reluctor wheels. One for USDM and another for the EDM/JDM/etc. There are two technical manuals for the Evo 8, and the waveform patterns of the cam reluctor are different. Not different enough to keep a USDM car from running on the EDM rom...but different enough to cause issues IMO.
If I had a USDM car, I'd run an USDM rom.
If I had a USDM car, I'd run an USDM rom.

Well, the EDM rom that I hear used most is the 9653, like you're running. I'd assume the JDM cam reluctor wheel is the same as the EDM one, but I've never seen one. USDM stuff is probably the odd man out due to the emissions laws and such.
The USDM cam reluctor wheel has a waveform like this. Keep in mind that you're looking at the low portion of the wave, not the high (the diagram is also mislabeled, the firing order is 1-3-4-2 like always):

The EDM cam reluctor waveform is like this:

They're close enough to be interchangeable, but the USDM one has a very small cyl #4 TDC trigger, whereas the EDM one is almost identical to the 2G DSM/3G Eclipse pattern. One long tooth and one medium tooth. I can see how an EDM rom might have some small hiccups when dealing with the shorter #4 tooth, when it's expecting a longer one that starts earlier in the cycle. That could be causing some phantom driveability issues IMO.
The two Tech Manuals:

EDM: http://www.lilevo.com/mirage/EVO%208...8/Workshop/13/ (Page 94)

Np, glad to share
.
A group of us over at DSMECU.com started trying to figure out the issue with the CEL on any USDM rom when used on a 1G DSM with the stock 1G DSM cam sensor. We were on the trail of creating a new trigger disc for it when we discovered the different evo 8 reluctor wheels. It was a purely accidental discovery, lol.

If you need to keep your emissions equiptment, or want to for some reason stick with the 9417, if you are pulling all of that equiptment anyways use the 9653 as it is better supported, and better defined.
I have used both, slight differences between the two, 9653 runs slightly smoother once you tune around the idle and part throttle issues, 9417 is a great ROM is you don't want to tinker much and only want to mess with fuel and timing.

That's funny. I thought the opposite. That's why I went to 9653 from 9417 when I went SD. I was hoping to try FreeFuel ECU patch and Live Map at some point.
