2006 evo 9 mr says unknown rom when trieing to connecto to ecuflash???

Hi guys, I just got a 2006 evo 9 mr. It was stock when I got it and I just got done doing a full build on it. I have two other evo's one is a 8 and the other is a X and I have no problems connecting to ecuflash. But when I connect to this 9 it says "unknown rom image". Ive never had this happen before and I am at a loss right now. Ive searched the forums and there was one similar problem but it seems that they resolved the problem through pm. Any help would be great. Thanks

Is the car stock or was it tuned? Is the ecu locked or the rom protected somehow?

Try downloading the xml files and pasting them into the rommetadata folder.

It had stock 9 turbo with S3 intake cam and S2 exhaust cam (which is weird to me, but that's what it has in it)if anyone could explain that it would be great too, 3"tbe, and it had been tuned somewhere before, I bought it from a car lot in Tacoma. Its not locked as far as I know, it connects like normal until where it would normally pull up the fuel, timing, etc settings it gives me Unknown Rom Image. Then idk what to do from there, I have always just plugged in to my previous evo's and it worked. And adding xml files into my rommetadata folder is something I have never done, so some insight there would be great. Thanks for the response guys.

Are you 100% sure it is stock and has never been flashed before ever? Maybe the hardware is all stock but someone tuned it still? If it had a tephra Rom on there and you didn't have the tephra xml it would say exactly what it is saying right now.

To identify the ROM you will need to save the ROM that has been downloaded into ECUFlash. The "use ROM without definition" option selected in the screenshot is the correct option to use, so from that dialog with that option selected click the "Next" button. Then use the "save ROM" command button to save a copy of the ROM (it should be 512kB in size for a 9).

Then you need to use a hex viewer and look at the 4 bytes starting at offset 0xf52 in the saved ROM file. For example (using an ID I believe is for an Evo 9), if the 4 bytes are 0x88, 0x58, 0x00 and 0x15 the ROM ID would be 88580015. Once you know the ROM ID you can google the ID or ask where to find a definition file...

Great tip, didn't know that. Confirmed it's true for my Evo IX rom

May be a stupid question guys but like I said im not too familiar with this rom, xml files, hex files etc talk. So do I need to download a hex file viewer to get my rom id? or is there a way to look at it otherwise? I need the newbie walkthrough, I have just saved my rom from my car but now I need to find out what it is. Thanks

I was having the same problem where I could not find my definition file. I tried to do what you said and open up the hex file in a hex viewer and still could not find what you are talking about. I do nt see any offset starting with 0xf52

If you don't want to install a hex viewer on your PC, I'm sure a little googling will turn up a website that will display all or part of the file in hex format via an upload - if you do this select one that can display just the first 4096 bytes (the ID is just below that point and there's no point in trying to display the rest of the file).

Perhaps a screenshot (for example, 88590015.hex) might help...

Thanks. I will open mine back up and check it out. The screenshot sure does help.

I did do it and found that mine is a 96940011.hex. But one thing that does not make sense to me is that from doing research that is an EVO VIII rom file and I have an EVO IX. Plust I have that rom file and it still has not opened my .hex file I have read from my ecu.
