EvoScan, Evo's, And Knock
So after using EvoScan and logging a couple Evo's I have found some odd stuff. I cant figure out if it is just the way that Evo's run or if it is EvoScan. I have logged a stock Evo 8 and a Stock Evo 9 and EvoScan says that both of them are getting multiple counts of knock. This seemed odd so I tried two different gas stations and the results were the same.
I then put an Intake and a MBC on my IX including an Eflash. I got knock no matter what I did, including run a combination of stock map or the Eflash and 14, 17,and 19 PSI. My friends Evo 8 also has an intake and a MBC and also a test pipe. His car got a bunch of knock at 20.5 PSI. Then we lowerd the PSI and it got slightly less knock. We also put the boost up to 22PSI and got almost NO knock. However, even without seeing any knock the ECU pulled timing untill the timing was -2 in some places. So I guess my question is this, has any one used EvoScan and not gotten knock. If you dont use Evoscan what do you use to log knock and does your evo always get knock(is it modded) Is it me or is their something odd going on when two stock cars both get knock even when running only 17 PSI. It has been very hot around Jersey latley. However tonight we did the evo 8 logging and it was 78 degrees with 54% humidity. |
I have a stock ix justed tuned by me and i have no knock. I do have a torque dampener engine mount that may help with any false knock.

I have had logs with no knock whatsoever for 3rd gear pulls and some that had a knock count of 1-2. this is with a stock evo9. this was also on 93 octane bp amoco ultimate.

Unfortunately the ECU does report knock counts below that fairly consistently, which is most likely due to the balance shafts having been removed from the block or possibly some of the other mods on the car. l8r) |
For the ECU, knock can be the following and may pull timing in response:
1) Detonation 2) Potholes 3) A chopper in next lane 4) A Dwn pipe hitting crossbar |
I have seen 0 knocks on my car and I have seen as many as 10 knock counts also (when I did aggressive tune and boosting high). It all depends on the tune and condition I think.
I found knocks even at partial throttle around 3000 rpm at 90 to 120 load range. So,Yes knock can happen even if you are boosting at 1 psi. And, hot weather gives me more knock counts. I think evoscan knock sum count is somewhat accurate. I wouldn't ignore it. |

Other then engine dampener, what mods do you have what did you adjust when tuning Did you have knock before you tuned it at all? |

I'm fairly relaxed about the log behaviour because I have listened to the engine with my own ears (through det cans) and know that it doesn't knock except occasionally on lift off (most of which I've also sorted) and it performs very well. I get sporadic low grade counts of 1s which I think are meaningless. 2s and 3s show I'm running it a bit "sparklier" as I call it. When I've seen a 4 occasionally (especially as a spike) on logs I have also found that there has been detonation and the timing seems to get pulled, but I then tune this out.
So I'm "cooperating" with the OEM knock control system and it seems to work. Knock is a sporadic thing and I'm pleased that the system is there in the background. I'm not getting hung up over a degree or so here and there and generally I find the system behaves appropriately. I'm cooperating because if I put more timing in the ECU seems to pull most of it out again. Even with methanol in the tank (with safe lambda) and no extra timing it will still do the odd 1 or 2 during spool up even with -1 or -2 timing. It hauls hard and doesn't knock so I don't mind. Significant knock is probably being prevented by the OEM system doing its trimming work. Since there are tables in the ECU that reveal it can pull out substantial spark timing before the next spark, it may be that the brief noises are too short for me to hear even through det cans. |
my car is still stock and i am seeing 1 count of knock in the 3700-4300 range.. but other than that nothing..

^ Yea the most Ive ever seen is 1 count of knock in that range as well

Were there any choppers near by? JK
Just add a gallon of Xylene or toluene to 5 gal of gas and see if it goes away. If so, then for sure it was knock, if not - ? |
