I decided to test the Ingersoll Rand 3 Port Boost Solenoid which is pretty much identical to the Perrin, but 1/3 the price.

it was 27.00 plus shipping came out to 33.00. There is another site that sells it for 23.00.

The good thing is that it is industrial grade and made out of aluminum so it looks pretty stout from appearance. Another good thing is that you do not have to wire a resistor up because as it sits it is about 37ohms, the gm is 29 ohms and 40 ohms with the resistor and the stock solenoid is about 33-34ohms.

Only thing you have to buy are the 1/8th npt barb fittings with 1/8th outlets from the local hardware store. You will need 3 of them and teflon tape. All this came out to about 7 bucks.

I use to have the GM solenoid hooked up and once I hooked up the Ingersoll Rand Solenoid, I had to turn down the WGDC because I started to overboost right away. As far as mounting, I unscrewed the stock solenoid from the bracket and mounted the new solenoid in its place. So far 2 days and it works just fine. Unfortunately I do not have any before and after boost plots since I dont have a 3 bar connected. Havent been playing with the car much, new born on the way in 8 weeks!!!! So I gotta save only can play with cheap lil toys like this hahaa. Anyways here are pics for those interested.

 

I've read that the GM solenoids are pretty loud. What about the Ingersoll-Rand?

 

Not loud at all compared to the GM, you can hear it though

 

How are you routing the vacuum lines to the solenoid? Is it like this?

Yea I am routing exactly like that. Which according to the diagram is interrupt.

 

It didn't change, I had to lower it after adding this solenoid. Not much maybe about 15% overall. Should it have been the same as the GM. If so the only thing I can think of is that on the GM when you add the resistor, voltage supply is slightly reduced as far as I know, could be wrong though.

 

It is a good solenoid I use it to. It works really well controlling boost. You can get it at mcmaster.com for the same price. Its the same unit used in the Perrin ebcs kit. No resistor needed just splice and solder it in.

 

from your pictures you might have it routed incorrectly. According to Perrin's diagram, you are to use Port 1 & 3 but it looks like you're using 1 & 2.

 

I also do not hear my GM. I am shocked anyone that drives an evo would complain the BCS makes noise. Am I the only one driving the car with the nosiest drivetrain on the planet?

This is good info though. Maybe the cheaper price will help persuade some of the local guys to finally move to ECU controlled boost.

Hehe, a local shop sold those as their "ECU boost solution" for much more than that price.

I always wondered what solenoids they where, I never looked into since we/I use the GM's.

Interesting thing was the shop set them up so less WGDC makes more boost. I guess they wanted to be different.

 

I am not sure, it seems to be boosting fine. Also the perrin diagram seems to label ports differently from the ingersoll rand one. I think you are looking at the one port at the top of the 2 and that one normally routes to the intake but i have it just shooting down not connected.

 

i am confused about these sensors. i know people change the map sensors to control and log boost i believe. Does this replace the stock wgdc solenoid?? or is it in addition. what are the benifits to going with a set-up like this? Sorry, i am very confused but a reply or a pm with any information would be greatly apreciated.

 

These aftermarket solenoids can bleed off more pressure from the WG, so they allow a wider range of boost control. Some say that these solenoids are faster as well which would give more precise boost control.
